I currently have a 2.80 rear or something and the car is not that hot out of the hole but once rolling is great, my buddy has a 4:11 posi chunk I can buy right, I think it would be pretty good given the 5.0 & the AOD (I'm not interested in going 140mph ) but also don't want to be geared way too low, what do you guys think?
Don

I'm running a 4.11 with an AOD in my 65 Stang with a 408c stroker....you want to have some fun.....get your AOD built up with the 4r70w gearset ;)

Off course traction in first gear will be a severe problem with a 2.84 first gear and a 4.11 rear gear...ask me how I know :D

I went with 3.89s in mine. The total difference between the two (mine and the 4.11) at 60mph is a couple hundred RPM. I think you'll be fine with the 4.11, but I wouldn't go any lower than that for a street car.

Using the examples mentioned you'll see that a 24 inch versus 26 inch tire makes as much of a difference as one or two notches on the R&P ratio does. Look at my chart below...two inches of tire height indicates a ~250RPM difference in 1:1 drive at 60mph, whereas the difference between the 3.89 and the 4.11 at 60mph in 1:1 is only ~150RPM.

Here's the chart

See what I mean?

This evidence is better than my other evidence

(plus its actually 1st gear traction problem and not OD gear traction problem ;) )

I don't know about the AOD with 4.11s, but my 4 speed has 2.78 first gear and it really jumps with 4.11s. I also know from experience that if your engine can't spin up fast, the 4.11s and low first gear will make it feel like a truck rather than fast car.
2.78 first, 4.11 gears, and a hot 302= Fun-fun!
2.78 first, 4.11 gears, and a stock 351c= Dump truck! The car would go 10' before running out of breath. 1st gear was useless unless I intended to up root a tree.

What is the OD ratio of the T5? I can make a chart for it too if I know. The 3rd gear will still be accurate for just about any transmission ever made (they all seem to have a 1:1 ratio) and THAT number is what you should look at from a performance point of view. Look at the overdrive only for highway cruising.

oD for the T5 is either .63 or .68,depends on the trans i think.

5.0 Mustang T5 ratios:

1st 3.35
2nd 1.99
3rd 1.33
4th 1.00
5th 0.68

I was thinkin about putting 4.10s in my '65 and see if I can chirp 4th gear since I can already do 3rd. :D

AOD = 2.40, 1.47, 1.00. 0.67

So the difference of one onehundredth of a point will not show, there's more variance than that for tire pressure and expansion!

In other words tha chart stands for the T5 and the AODs OD ratio, dunno about the TKO or the 3500 or....

i have 4.11s with my tremec TKO (same ratios at T5). real happy with them, but i've got a lot higher redline (6500+) than most people with 5.0s.

3.73s in my 90 Fox were perfect with a T5. go too much lower and you run out of RPM real fast.

That's only 250 rpms more than a 5.0 running a stock tune on the computer.

The redline in a stock 5.0 maybe 6250, but that doesn't mean it will make any power up there. Most of the stock 5.0 run out of breath around 5250 -5500 RPM, thats being generious.
