4.6 Questions

I currently have a Vortech Superchagred 5.0. Thinking of purchasing a 96-98 GT or Cobra (cobra's are expensive!) The 96-98 Gt fits my plans and budget better. I currently have a 4.6 engine out of a 99GT with 32,346miles on it. I wanna put this motor into the 96-98 car. What is needed for the swap besides the ECU and harness? I'm also thinking of adding a HP stage 1 turbo so the 4.6 will get forged internals. How strong are the stock tranmissions? Will the 96-98 transmission work for the 99+ engine? How much power can the block take? No use in buying 650+forged internals only to have the block crack! Will a 4.64v out of a Mark VIII be better cuz I've found one for 400.00 at a junk yard?

The old 5.0L blocks may have gone South at 500-550hp, but the modular block with forged internals will take in the neighbourhood of 1000hp, so don't count on it cracking any time soon. The Mark VIII block isn't a bad idea either. The heads and rest of the components won’t work, since it’s a DOHC design, but the block will. Not necessarily from a strength perspective, but the aluminum block will save you some weight over the SOHC iron block. Just keep in mind, that with an aluminum block, with aluminum heads and an under hood turbo set up, you're going to see a lot of heat soak with daily driving.

As far as the transmission is concerned…..with any mega horsepower car, the need to address the rest of the drive/power-train arises. Were I you, I’d consider a built 4R70W to match the turbo 4.6. It will perform better than any stick and can be build far stronger, for less money in the process.

The turbo kit including installation is 7900.00 which also includes dyno tuning. I've found several 96-98 cars ranging from 4500 to 8000. I can't find a single Cobra in decent shape for anywhere near that. Plus the insurace on a cobra is ridiculous! I pay 98.34 a month for my GT and the Cobra would be 174.12????? OUCH!
