The AC in my pic above is off my 83.. Not sure if there is a difference in them.... The decal on the top cover is all I know..IIRC the '84/'85 housings are said to flow around somewhere around 560 CFM.

Ok, so the pre '83 was the "taller/smaller" version and '83 to '85 were all the same. Couldn't remeber that.The '83 uses the same 13" (nominal) diameter air filter as the '85.... so I'd assume it has the same 17" diameter housing. (And it also looks the same to me.)

i looked into this a lot. car craft ran one on a mid 12 sec car. it gained a tenth over an open element. ford thought it was worth it and so do i. i'm sure it helps cool the whole intake system and gotta have a little ram air effect also. fits under the hood with the perf rpm, 600 holley and 1/4 inch thermal spacer no problem. not to mention it's less of a fire hazard and looks cool as hell. i took the the heat door plumbing off mine since it's a summertime car onlyI'm running an air cleaner from a 1985 GT on my car, the dual snorkel one that came on a four barrel. Does anyone have any dyno or drag test data on these, or know whether they are considered good for performance? Not sure if it's better because it's getting air from outside of the engine bay or if an open type air filter would be better since it's less restrictive. It's a mild engine, making about 255 rwhp based on 1/4 trap speed. probably experiment with it more next spring.

drill the heads off rivets holding them on, cut some sheet metal pieces bigger than the holes, sand the attachment areas to bare metal. few tack welds to hold them in place. used regular jb weld as filler, let dry and sand them smooth.That same air cleaner assembly was used on 460cid engines, so there's no way it won't flow enough for a stock or stockish 302, imo.

here's what i have. 2000 explorer engine +.030, 0 decked, 4cc hyper flat tops. .040 quench. 9.4-1 compression. stock p heads. comp 35-440-8 cam, .512 lift, 220 dur @ .050, 110 lobe sep, 106 intake c/l. cam is ground 4 degrees adv., perf rpm, holley 600 street avenger, pertronix flame thrower ign. stock ford valve train except for alex's parts beehive valve springs. shorty headers. i see some people say they don't need much timing like 12 initial, 31 advance. i'd like to be pretty close to start out.Depending on modifications most kinda like 14* BTDC
I have used a vacuum gauge to set timing but it's mostly by ear, of course modifications like forced induction needs more precise parameters.
