73 mach 1

hello all
just bought a 73 mach 1 with 351c 2v.this is my first muscle car and my first attempt to rebuild an engine how hard would it be to rebuild the 351 to putout 350hp?i know i have a lot of learning to do.i want to gather the parts this summer and next winter rebuild the engine.any suggestions?

You are about to fall of the page so I'll repond.

Much depends on having the $$$$ to spend, the tools, a place to work and a number of other factors. It can and is done everyday. If you are inexperienced, time spent just learning how to take car of a car is well spent.

Is it hard? No, but a lot depends on YOU and your ability to see a project through to completion. Better to start on a small scale and succeed rather try a major project and fail.

Any '73 car is going to need some work BEFORE you start adding a hot engine. Start with those small scale projects first.

I have a 1973 Mach 1, Got it last year, needed new EVERYTHING, im still owrking on it, I have the brakes and fuel system done, stripping my fender wells right now, gonna use POR-15 on them looks alot better then the old undercoating, then putting in new suspension, then rebuilding the engine. I have a 72' 351c 2bbl in my Mach 1 but I bought 4bbl heads for it, they make alot more power the problem is they dont have the torque the 2bbl heads do with the smaller ports and in turn dont start making real power till 3500RPM, For the 2bbl engine though I was going to build it up with Headers, edelbrock 4bbl intake, 4bbl edelbrock 600cfm carb, 3.70 gears, new cam, and it should have been a quick car for fairly cheap if you can do the work yourself. Once I can get the suspension and engine done im hopping to have it completed by late summer if im lucky, it could be done sooner but money is my main problem. Depending on your car and income get ready for a long project especially if it was anything like mine. They are mean looking cars especially with the BOSS blackout hood, hood pins and mag 500's with lots of rubber and throw on the front and rear spoilers. One more thing, learn from my mistakes, dont worry about interior trim or cosmetic stuff till you can get the mechanical stuff done. I was stupid and bought all the interior stuff then found out the engine was not in the good shape I thought it was, the suspension needed replaced, the floorpans needed replaced and the fuel system from the tank to the carb needed replaced. Old cars are pretty easy to work on which is a plus.

one more question.how far can u go with these cars b4 they fail an emissions check?thanks for the advice.i'm sure i'll be picking all of your brains in the months to come

For what its worth, I have the same setup as you are running (2v 351c in a 73 mach) and I have the edelbrock 4 barrel intake and a 620 edelbrock, and hate it. The engine needs more carb and a diffrent intake. I don't like the power curve of my setup.
