8.8 rearend oil change

Today I change my rearend oil with Royal Purple 75w140.
I bought 4 qt thinking it will take all but after 2.5 qts it's full WTF ? Din't even took 3qts. Is that right ? it start comming out of the hole so I stoped.

Is that a right amount of oil? Is Royal Purple have more oil on there 1qt bottle?

I was kinda confused myself. I put 4.10's in a couple weeks ago and used the Royal Purple oil. I thought it should have taken more, but it was coming out after a little over 2 qts.

I changed my rearend oil recently with Royal Purple 75W90 and
it took 2.5-3.0 quarts so,that sounds about right.I love the Royal
Purple it's great stuff.

2.5-3.0 qts is about right.

and I change my motor oil too . I used to put 5.5qt or mobil 1 sy but this time I put only 4.7 qts and dipstick show full ?
Confuse. maby I use to put more oil then i should.

How many qts of oil 2002 mustang gt 4.6L engine takes ?

Do you guys have picture of how to read dipstick?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my Haynes (for 98 GT) 8.8 says to use 3.75 pints. There are two pints in a quart so that means that it should take roughly 1 3/4 quarts. That's what mine took almost exactly.

You probably didn't let it drain completely (no big deal). Next time let it drip until it stops completely and then see if it takes 5.5 again. As for the dipstick, the oil should be at the full line (simply stated). If it is way above the fill line, I don't think that is good though ...

when you change to a lower gear (ie 4:10's) you have more gear in there taking up room for oil. Just a thought but it makes sense to me

I need to do mine as part of mantinence...

How did you guys do it..? Jack the car up, take off cover, let drain, put cover back on and refill? I know how to do it, but the thing is so damn low to the ground!!!

I think im gonna have to drive the front up on ramps, and jack the rear end up so I can crawl under... as long as its level it should be good.

I had to go buy a pump to put oil, was 7$ at checkers

make sure you leave the top cover bolt on half way it will keep the oil comming out under controll

I just jacked the entire car up ... not that it helps much because as you said our cars are low (especially if they are lowered). But I got it high enough to slide in and out of there relatively easily. You will be doing the above-head-upper body-racheting (not hard). The bolts are easy to break loose and I just let it drain then scraped the old gasket/rtv/ off, re-RTV'd it over the bolt holes and put it back together. Then used the pump to suck the fluid out of the new oil bottles and pump it in through the fill hole. That is a messy part so make sure to have some newspaper and stuff on the ground. One other suggestion, wear latex gloves and beware *friction modifier in the old fluid makes it smell worse than any other automotive fluid I have ever smelled*!! Hope that helps.

What do you mean? I just torque all the bolts to 32 pounds. Do I have to leave one little loose?

when removing the cover to drain the old oil leave the top bolt in but half wat out so the oil dosn't come out all over you and the floor. When you put the rear cover back on YES tighten all bolts to 32 pounds

The drain plug is located in the back left hand side of differential you know
in back of the pumpkin.

go to costco, and buy a big azz jar of peanut butter and pack the whole jar in the diff housing.. it worked for me.. i picked up 250hp at the side mirrors
