I just put new drums and shoes on my 86 vert today. Well I couldn't get the drums on because I couldn't collapse the shoes enough even with the star wheel screwed all the way in. I noticed that the parking brake strut was not fully seating in the notch on the secondary shoe. To me it seems I need to loosen up the e-brake cable so the parking brake lever notch will line up with the notch on the shoe. If so can I get to the adjusting nut from under the car, or do I have to remove the center console?

Yea, it sounds like the parking brake cable needs adjusting.

The pre-87 Stangs are different than the 87+ Stangs. The pre-87 Stangs needed to have the parking cable adjusted manually. The 87+ Stangs have a spring.

As I remember, there's an adjusting nut on the end of the cable that attaches to the handle. You can remove that trim and rubber portion that the handle slides between. That gives you enough access to the adjusting nut.

Good luck!
