87Mustang fuel tank/pump assembly fitment

New LMR tank and hanger assembly with 255 lph pump. When I set the hangar assembly in the tank with the sock aligned in the sump, the bottom hits the tank bottom and it won’t sit fully inside without force. I got it in and the lock ring on, but will it cause issues with the bottom of the pump/sock sitting tight on the floor of the tank? Fuel starvation?

Yes, this will definitely affect fuel delivery.

This seems to be a common issue with the latest crop of parts store tanks and hangers. Often times, the tanks are damaged in shipping which pushed the bottom up. You can try taking a wooden dowel or something that won’t puncture the tank and try and reposition the bottom of the tank downwards. If that doesn’t work you may have to just get a new tank. Another common issue is the baffles are spot welded in the wrong spot.

If you can’t make it work I would return it outright to LMR and source a tank from local parts store. All the same brands, but given the common occurance of tanks having hanger fitment issues, it’s just easier to drive to the parts store vs dealing with shipping.

Learned this one first hand a couple of times. The shippers are brutal with packages like that.

Do you know what brand the tank is? I looked on LMRs website and didn't recognize the part numbers, though they probably changed them for their own.

I've had really good luck with the Spectra premium tanks. Everyone I've gotten fits really well.

I think only Spectra and Dorman are making tanks for the fox now. Likely one of those but only way to really tell is side by side comparison.

I had a spectra tank and that was the issues I had. One dent on the other side and the baffle was off but I was able to make it work.

Thanks everyone. Looks like this is a different issue, though. LMR responded and said they have another customer with the same issue, and it is the pump bracket that is nearly half an inch longer. Guess I was lazy not to check this sooner, but measured old and new and confirmed it. They’re already working on a solution with the manufacturer, and luckily I’m in no hurry. The other guy was in a hurry and made it work. Dropped the filter sock in the tank getting the pump out for the second time, so I’ll be fishing for that. Any tips? Flipping the tank and shaking seems my best bet! Lol!

Is the old bracket rotted or just covered in crap? I've never had one rotted but I have soaked a few in metal prep or evaporate rust to clean them up when they came out of crusty tanks.

As for the sock long nose pliers while peaking in threw the filler neck or butyl on an extendable magnet if the sock doesn't have any metal in the ring.

I would try and see if one of your local parts stores has the correct one. I know Spectra is a well respected brand when it comes to tanks so you could search Spectra FG30A for the hanger. Shows to be around $85 from AutoZone and Advance. RockAuto has several but they appear to come with a pump and are cheaper than just buying a hanger. Anyhow, just some options.

You would be surprised how well that cleans up once you take the pump and hose off.... If you have any white vinegar in the house, throw it in a 5 gallon bucket while you wait for one to show up lol nylon bush after soaking and I bet most of the plating is there under the rusty varnish build up.... You might be able to just swap the pump bracket to the new pick up if that's the part that's longer on the repo part

Even if just the lower pieces of the OEM hanger will clean up it looks like that is what is too long on the new one. You may be able to use the new upper and the OEM lower piece.

I’ll give it a shot today. LMR pulled all of their stock, and all are too long. Refunding and offering goodies for the trouble. I could also drill the new lower portion of the bracket to make it work. I’ll get it in there one way or another! Thanks again everyone.

I used a spectra premium hanger and it didn’t seem to give me much fuss.
