9" question

I just bought a 9" housing yesturaday with no brakes or anythign, just the housing. How wide should it be. What is the width of just the housing in 65 66 mustangs, not with brakes or axles in it or anything. Is 25 bucks a good deal for it. Its an early style. It doenst have the big bulg out the back. Its got the 2 dimples. Thanks.

If it had no bulge and has 2 dimples then it is a 57-59 variety of some type and a drop in for a 65-66 car. I hope you do have the axles.

No i dont have the axils but i grabed some out of a 65 66 mustang and they slid right in. I dont think it is the 57 58, it seems a little wide. I stood it up on end next to a 8" and it was a half an inch to long, but i dont know what 8" housing i had.

The axles might slide in but they are more than likely the wrong length. You are going to have to do some measuring with a pumpkin in it to determine the proper axle length for your housing and I hope you have or can find the right bearing retainer plates to match it. Sometimes good deals only seem that way on the surface.

I think those older axles are the bigger bearing axles as well.

That 57.25 inches is from axle flange to flang i think. What i am planing on doing is narrowing the housing to the 65 66 width and then just reusing the my old axles. That should work right, it also looks like my backing plates will bolt up too, but its hard to tell when my car is 3 hours a way from where i am right now.

I just ran out and measured the housing, from housing end to housing end its 52 7/8" wide. Anybody have the housing width on there 65 66. Thanks

52 7/8 should be about right for a 57-59 Ford and a 65-66 Stang. Measure the distance between the spring pads, should be 43 inches for a Stang. If it is a 57-59 Ford 9" then I have one hanging in my shop that I can measure the axles for you to get the correct length. If you don't have the axles, then it would be a good time to go with 31 spline ones

The spring perches are 43" apart. I would like to keep my 28 spline axils because of money for one, and also because they have already been up graded to the heavier duty axils that ford made. The onse that dont taper down, and yes they can be shortend and resplined. Thangs guys for all your help.

Could you measure that for me, that would be awsome. Also does yours have a drain plug in it. Mine has a drain plug and a fill plug. Thanks

www.ultrastang.com should have all the info you need. IIRC, the 65-66 mustangs and the 57-59 housings are 52.25 or 52.5" (it's in the link). Sounds like you scored big! IF it is a 57-59 medium bearing housing, your old axles should work fine (brakes too).

blue66stang------ I didn't get a chance to measure those axles last night, I'll try to do it this afternoon. And yes, this one's got both a fill and drain hole. Also came with a WAR case center section ( looks just like the N case, without the N) and a Detroit locker

blue66tang---- axle measurements are 26 1/16 and 30 7/16.This is from the face of the stud flange where the wheel contacts the axle when bolted up, to the inside tip of the axle.

Thanks guys. Ill keep you posted when i find stuff out. Its hard to figure things out when my car is somewhere else. I know this is a early housing, but i dont think it is a 57-59 car. Its just a little to wide i think. If i had enough room with my tires. I wouldnt even narrow it, but since i rub already i better get sit back to stock width. Maybe even a 1/4 narrower on bolth sids just so i can get a little bit biger tire under there. Thanks again
