I was looking on ebay and found a 90 mm maf off an 03 cobra. I can get a really good deal on it. So my question is, Can I just use the maf housing and change the electronics out. Will this work? Will it give me a little more power? Right now I want to stay with my 19lb injectors. Later I want to upgrade to 42lbs after a cam and head install. That way I can mod the harness and get new injectors.

No you can't. The 2003 Cobra uses a 39 pound per hour injector, which the MAF is calibrated for. If you swap on an MAF calibrated for 39 pounds into a car with 19 pound injectors with a computer expecting to see 19 pound injectors, it would be a disaster.

If you want to run 42s in the future, I suggest buying a Lightning MAF (which is calibrated for 42s) and 42 pound injectors, and tuning the car all at once. I suppose you could run the Cobra MAF with Cobra injectors if the deal is too good to pass up. You'll have to get it tuned no matter what you do.

Switching just the MAF won't pick you up any horsepower.

to run those meters you will need an aftermarket tune. they are not calibrated like the pmas (pro-m) and c&l where you can just use the stock tune with the correct injectors


but to the oridg question, no you cant swap out the electronics. the electronics are calibrated to a specific sized MAF. also why porting the stocker isnt a good idea.
 
I'll be selling my 90MM LMAF meter calibrated for #24 with the injectors in a few wks.

Common misconception. The LMAF is NOT calibrated for any injector. Ford doesn't do it this way. Pro-M and C&L trick the computer and when they do this load calculation - which controls timing, it is off. The calibration is done in the tune. You will also need a late model pigtail connector and a filter adapter. If you are interested PM me. I have the complete setup.

well all I know is when I bought the car it had no tune (chip) and Im running the 90MM LMAF and #24 injectors.

Yes, like stated above all factory ford mafs are setup to measure the air going into the motor not the fuel. That is done elsewere in the eec.

To run a factory ford maf you will need a tuner to program that maftransfer, basicly the graph that states X amount of air at given volts from .01v to 5.0v.

The larger 4.6 family of maf is also going to need a pigtail like mentioned above.

Honestly, the Lmaf and 03 cobra maf (I am suspect that they are basicly one in the same like our gt and cobra maf...no proof but a hunch/idea/guess) might be a little too large for a fairly stock motor as the amount of airflow in the upper end of the transfer/flow/voltage range is going to be out of the range the car will need. If you have plans to go bigger fine but if they are far off...hold off. The stocker is good for some 300rwhp so dont be so eager to jump to a larger maf.
 
I was just looking and thought it might help out. It was only 35 bucks and 10 for shipping so I thought it might have been a good idea. But I guess I'll hold off. I want to do a head and cam swap or a super charger just not sure what to do at this point. So I thought it would help to have for future use.

I think this is really six of one or one half dozen of the other. So technically what I should have said is:

Unlike aftermarket MAF units that contain a calibration that piggy backs the stock MAF transfer, the LMAF does not come with this calibration, it will instead have to be done via tuning in the computer. The after market MAF uses the same transfer curve as the stock MAF but fools it for the specific increase in injector size. The OEM MAF does not do any "fooling" because Ford designs it for OEM replacement, not for aftermarket reasons.

Either way, you're going to need a tune when you swap on a new MAF with injectors that are not the ones the original transfer was designed for.

An interesting question would be.... could the adaptability of the computer system be able to handle the difference between the LMAF transfer and 39 pound injectors? They are off by about 7 percent, I wonder what the threshold is for the adaptability algorithm?

$35 heck.... I thought you were talking about one a lot higher, which is why I said I would go with the LMAF. It's a good meter and is a LOT cheaper and easier to work with. IE you can get it tuned for about whatever you need.

If Don says they are virtually the same thing. You should buy now. :D Just know you'll need a chip to do what you are wanting. It's not just plug n play.

No, it would not adapt for different injectors. Ford's adaptive schemes in the older than '08 processors is only there to adapt for normal wear on 02 sensors, MAF, etc. Not different injectors. The '08 Bullit on the other hand has an amazing adaptation scheme and some claim what's done in the processor can adapt to things like different injectors and even a SC. That's the buzz anyway, remains to be seen, though it should be possible as a number of imports already do that.

In the processor code the MAF transfer function is a completely seperate function than the injector functions and scalars. So you can change the injectors to whatever you like regardles sof what MAF you are using and you can change the MAF to anything you want even if you are not changing injectors. In fact you can use a 30# Pro-M or PMAS calibrated MAF with 42# injectors or any combination you want - it just gets a lot tougher to tune that way.

But as stated the way Ford does it no MAF is 'calibrated' for injectors. Period. It does need to be tuned.

As far as injectors go, you can use whatever you want in any Ford, but be advised that 39# injectors have a split spray pattern for split port intakes. Some of the V6 injectors do this too - you can tell because they have the different connector. The pattern is split in two. They still work in a non-split port car, but there are additional tuning factors that have to be dealt with because of the fuel film that's retained on the intake walls will now be changed and so the transient fuel values now have to be changed as well - and 90% of the tuners out there are probably not aware of this. This fuel film is actually accounted for in the tune from Ford and if you change the configuration you'll get rich or lean spikes whitout modding the transient fuel values.

Just picked it up off ebay. Should I wait to install it after I do my head and cam intall? Where can I get a tune in SoCal. I would like to run gt40p heads with an e303 cam. does that sound like a good combo?
