Alright here is the new info, distributor is in correctly, line up distributor like prior to removal. With distributor hold down lose, timing light on, looks like 70 % BTDC. Car surges at idle, throttle response not crisp. Here is the kicker, if you pull the distributor housing(pressure on the back side of the cap) towards the front of the car, the timing jumps to 15%, the surging idle cleans up, the throttle becomes crisp again.

Would this be a bad distributor? Is the shaft moving when I put pressure on it?

Thanks, Kurt

Wow, I've never even heard of that. I assume you changed the cap when you did the distributer. Maybe the cap adapter (the plastic piece between the distributer and the cap) has gone out of whack. They do get loose after awhile when they soften up. I think it's under $10 for a new one at a parts store. It's a cheap part you might want to change. If that doesn't work, I would take the distributer back out, and make sure that shaft isn't loose or something.

Thought I'd put the solution out in the event anyone else runs into this.

Difficult to diagnose.

The Distributor had a little play in the shaft which was making timing the car impossible. Replaced the distributor, runs like a champ.

Thanks for posting the results. Many times when people reach the solution, they stop posting, so these unusual problems never get the solutions posted here. I always recommend replacing the whole distributer. It's only about $100 for a rebuilt distributer, and I don't see the point in spending the time just to change the electronics in it.

not to mention you'll get a warrenty with it too.
and free replacement is always good as long as your not taking it back every month
