96-98 Maf on an 89

Please read the thread posted by Jrichker!!!!!!!!

This may work and it may not.

You will not be calibrating a stock Ford MAF to your injector size. That is something only the aftermarket MAF meters do.

In order for the meter you want to use to work PERFECTLY, you will need to use an aftermarket tuner that can change the MAF Transfer.
The MAF Transfer is basically a calibration file inside the EEC-IV.

Without a tuner your chances of being happy with the end result is 50/50 if your lucky.
Without the tuner you will be dipping into the adaptive ability of the ECU. However there is only so much the Ford computer can compensate for.

Well the reason I asked was that I came across a new Pro-M optimizer at a good price, the problem is that it is for the 96-98 mafs. I was hoping that I could use any Pro-M 96-98 mustang style meter, the optimizer and the pigtail adapter on my 89. I will be going with a s/c soon (6-8 psi) and will need new new injectors as well as a maf.

The aftermarket meters, including Pro-M, do things differently than Ford did.

If you don't have a Pro-M meter now then just buy the appropriate meter for your application when the time comes.

I would start by deciding what size injectors you will need (boost dependant). What size injector you use will influence the calibration of the MAF meter.

hope that made sense, Jack Daniels is helping me type,

I know how everything works, I'm just trying to save a little cash by getting the 96-98 maf because they are usually cheaper on ebay and I have the optmizer that matches it.

I plan on running 36-42# injectors, actually it all really depends on which ones I find for the best deal first. I was just hoping that with the optimizer I could use mismatched parts (i.e. 42# injectors and a 24# calibrated MAS) and it will all work out. Hopefully it works out for me and I don't end up paying more in the end, like what usually happens when you try to save money and cut corners.

I didnt mention it before...but I used a pro-m univer made for a 96-98 mustang in my setup. I chopped up my factory plug a bit and found it to work flawlessly with my setup.

Thanks, thats what I was originally asking, I should have mentioned the Pro-M maf in the first post. I think I'm going to get the adapter pigtail so if I switch back to the other style maf sensor plug later then I won't have to cut the wiring again.
