I have been reading in the mustang forums for a while and have just become a member. In addition to owning a 95gt I also own a 96 model ranger splash with a 2.3 liter. I really need some help. I want to get more power out of it but I know nothing about this motor. I thought you guys could help. I have 800 dollars to spend. What do you reccommend? Thanks

In all honesty, bolt on gains are going to be small. You will notice them, but they certainly won't make your truck fast.
Keeping that in mind, putting on a different exhaust is fun, because you get an aggressive sound too.

This is what I would do to a Ford Splash and if I had the money to :D

or swap in a bigger motor like the 3.0L or 4.0L V6s

**I would think his truck still used the same EEC IV that a DP DIS does but not sure since I think 96' is when they started switch to the OBII deal. Either way I think he could still drop in a 2.3T but with the OBII he would probly have to swap engine harnesses. Now that is just a guess on my part.**

A couple things that you may want to do may include the following.

- New High flow exhaust
- Air Induction
- Ignition components ie. bigger plug wires, nicer plugs, new distibutor cap and rotor (However, these will not increase horsepower, just increase throttle responsiveness and you may notice a little higher performance at higher rpm's)
- Bump timing

This is about all I can think of off the top of my head, hope it helps a little.

You could fabricate yourself a cold air induction, or I think there are 1 or 2 companies that make one. Check out James Duff (company name, but I don't have a link for you).
Also, a mild cam would give you an extended rpm range with little lose in torque.

Theres was a Ranger CAI on ebay last night so I would check it out.

-make sure your Ranger has a tube header if not put one on.

-better exhaust system like delete the pre-cat and put a high flowcat/muffler on.

-Full MotorCraft tune-up.

-Disconnect the knock sensor (heck if it works on a 2.3T it may help on a N/A)

-cam

-mill the head

-polish the intakes. (don't gut )

-75 shot nitrous

Thats the typical stuff I can think of

It's too bad you don't want to do a motor swap. A 5.0 will drop right in. That's what I did. But I had a 3.0 to start with.
That will be good for mid 14's or less in the 1/4. And tons of fun.
But, to each his own. I would look into porting if at all possible. And raise the compression by milling the head, if you do port. A header is a must, and get a smooth intake tube and larger filter.
