Lies!

Used PI heads/cams/intake will run $300-500 minus install. A PI headswap will make a 96-98 GT faster than a 99-04, stock for stock. (PI swap increases compression giving and extra ~10-15hp). The fact that the 98 is manual and the 00 is auto, that gives another advantage to the 98. The 00's better gears can be offset by 4.10's in the 98 for $500-600 including install.

I'm also partial to black 96-98's, though

Lies my ass.I didn't say a stock 00. Did you not see all the stuff that was already on the '00?With parts and labor, it would have been hard to match the numbers the '00 was putting down. The mods were in his sig, but they are gone now.

I did see them, actually. The only performance mods I saw were a bassani x-pipe, a chip and a K&N. Cost for all that would probably be ~$1000, less if there are no cats on the pipe. I still don't see how it'll "take you a lot more than $2000 to get the 98 to be as fast as the 00"

ok, for arguments sake, the mods you listed are probably a hair under $1000, plus $1000 for the p.i. swap there's $2000, the '00 had 4.30 gears probably another $400- $500 there. There's over $2000 in mods already.I don't remember what else it had, nor do I care.May not take a LOT more, but it will take some careful planning if you are wanting to stay n/a and reach the same performance ,especially on an 80k engine.Sounds like a rip-off anyway, if he wanted to sell the car, I would think that he would be a little more responsive.
I think I would just keep looking, there are plenty of cars out there.

Either way, I agree, I'd keep looking

I'll bet he could find a kick-ass '98 cobra for under $10,000!

I'm leary of anything high performance with a bunch of miles. My 98 cobra had 75k on it, and every other day something would go out.Seems like everytime I would get something fixed, the check engine light would come back on a day later and I would be out another couple hundred bucks.I traded it in on my 01 and have had no problems whatsoever.Maybe I just had a bad one, or one that was mistreated, but I would still rather have a low mileage 99+ than a 98 cobra with a bunch of miles.
