A 302 at my disposal.. advice wanted.

So in a few days i'll be swapping motors from my lincolns and scrapping one of them... without the car to put it in, one of the motors will be out in the open. i've decided to tear it down and build it up a bit. i'd like to do this as efficiently (cheaply) as possible

so here's what i'm thinking thus far:

get the block machined and bored 30 over to a 306.

pick up some 351 windsor heads, port the **** out of them, new valve seats, new valves and springs.

ported/matched 351 intake.

BIG ****ing cam.

750-850 carb set up...

this is a very broad idea of what i'd like to do..

i'm unsure about pistons as of right now because i don't know whether this motor will be N/A or blown.

anyone have any better ideas to do a rock solid 350+ hp set up? The way i figure it, with this set up, if done correctly, i should be able to peak somewhere between 350-400 hp at the wheels.

but like i said, this is my first build up and i'm going to be a COMPLETE n00b with it. So if anyone's got any suggestions, definitely let me know.

Be careful with you carb and cam selection. Don't go with the bigger is better theory, especially with the carb. I have not worked on carbed vehicles in quite a while so I am in no position to give advice as to exactly which carb to get but I have seen plenty of guys throw a 750cfm carb on a mild 302 set up, mostly street driven, and then bitch moan and complain because it runs rich, has horrible fuel mileage and seems low on power.

Big cfm numbers do not equate to big hp numbers. Get some suggestions from the guys here. I am sure that you will get plenty of good suggestions.

yeah i know.. i'm good on the carb knowledge. i currently have a street avenger 670 on my current set up and it's perfect for it. however, the setup i'll be running is substantially larger and i intend on running really high flowing heads with a larger cam, so the increased fuel is necessary. so i figured 750 should be about right.. maybe a little less, maybe a little more - haven't looked at the specifics yet. i know what i'll need when i get there. but yeah, i know. and thanks for the caution

I think you are sadly mistaken on ported 351W heads to be "really high flowing heads". Almost any aftermarket head is going to be better out of the box. Also, you should not get a really big cam if your heads are not going to be really high flowing, especially if this is going into a street car. Also, since you say this is your first build, a big cam is going to cause you a lot of grief when you go to tune it. The ported 351 heads will be ok, just don't think they are better than they will be, and just get a mild cam that is advertised for up to about 6000rpm or less. Your 670 street avenger would also feed that setup.

You're probably looking at more like 275-300 at the wheels depending on the port job of the heads and the cam to match. 350 at the wheels is a lot and too much of a stretch for the heads you plan.

So rather than sit here and rip my **** apart, how about you offer up some alternatives? don't just school me, educate me. how would YOU do a build up on the cheap?

I didn't rip your **** apart. All I said was you are being unrealistic, and that is the best advice you can get, because if you put that engine together you would be disappointed and then come here and ask why your engine is underpowered, and then you would get the same answer that your parts do not equate to your expectations. So just listen to the advice.

And if you actually read what I wrote, you would see the complete list of suggestions on what to do if you use the 351W heads that I said would be fine. I guess people just take too much offense to objectivity these days.

So, what's the deal? Do you want to actually hit 350hp+ at the wheels for as cheap as possible, or do you want a cheap build to get as much hp as possible?

try and find a 5.0 explorer at the JY. score the heads and intake, they are the same as the gt40/cobra pieces and will outflow 351 heads. only I just saw you are wanting to stay carbed so get the intake anyway and sell it. you can almost always make money on those. I personally like the TFS-1 cam for a good rounded OTS cam, but I dont know if you want to go flat tappet or roller. we really need to know more about your build. depending on what kind of parts you go with you shouldnt spend more than about 1500 on a decent rebuild.
