A/C Evaporator Question

Quick question, I just bought a 94 GT off of a guy and he took the liberty of cutting the A/C evaporator lines at the firewall when he did his A/C removal and basically ****ed them up completely in doing so, because he didn't want to buy the A/C quick disconnect tool. Anyway, this means that I have to replace the A/C evaporator core to hook the A/C back up. This is essentially the same job as replacing the heater core correct? Only reason why I ask is because my Ford service manual of all things says that if the A/C evaporator core needs to be replaced, that a whole new housing (that holds the evap core, heater core, etc.) is required to be installed. Now that is just ridiculous, if I just follow the directions for replacing the heater core, I should have the access needed to get the A/C evaporator core out and install a fresh one correct? Just curious because my service manual mentioned the housing, which I don't see the point in having to replace the entire thing. Anyone ever do their evaporator core before?

First of all. Can you send me a copy of your ford service manual? I can't seem to find one anywhere!

But back on topic, I think because of the time involved in replacing the evaporator or heater core, the factory just replaces them all while you are there, because the part is so cheap, you might as well do both at the same time. It's a serious night mare of a job though, so I think you should avoid it all costs, unless you have to.

I wouldn't worry about that denotation in the manual and just simply r/r the evaporator and the heater core. The housing can stay. Definately do the heater core with a real Ford heater core. The autozone ones are junk. Your heater core may not be leaking, but it will, so you should replace it now; rather than having to replace it later and tear everything apart.


Personally, I would just repair the lines. We do at our work on a/c units all the time. With some aluminum solder and an oxy-acetylene torch, you can braze an extension off of the firewall and couple it to your new lines. And in all seriousness, I would do this, rather than killing yourself replacing the evap core. But, the choice is yours.

Hey thanks for the input, yeah I figured I'd do the heater core as well and replace it with an OEM model even though its about 100 bucks, but better than doing it in the future considering the car has 107k miles on it. Yeah I thought about getting the lines fixed, but the guy literally cut the lines so that they are crimped and bent, and are about 1 1/2" inside the firewall to where you can only take the tip of your finger and touch them. ****!!!! Haha anyway, yeah the job shouldn't be so bad, had worse. I got the manual off of www.fordcds.com, the .nrg 93-94 file didn't seem to have the right volume, but with the 93-94 car .iso file, I got the cd to work great. I used IsoBuster to extract the entire volume into a folder, and then used Nero and started a new Iso9660 CD with the volume name 93_94c11 or w/e it states on the site, and burned the cd, it will work. If you need any help with this just IM me on AIM, its listed in my profile. I have to run to work though! thanks!

Well then I guess you have to replace the evap. No choice now...lol, what a turkey, cutting it like that.

I had been to that site many times, but the files he hosted would never finish downloading. But looks like he moved it to torrents very recently, which is great. I have my protocol encryption enabled though, so idk if I will be able to see all of the seeds/leechers.

But back on topic, good luck getting the dash apart. I believe it's a relatively easy task, just very time consuming. But if you do it that way, you can replace everything without destroying the housing. Many cut a hole in the housing and yank out the heater core that way. I wouldn't do that personally.

I am sure the manual tells you step by step how to do the heater core/evap core, so I would just follow it as necessary. They do usually add some extra steps, so just use common sense as to what is necessary. I would plan on doing the job over the weekend just in case something goes awry, as things always do.

Yeah so finally got to it, and realized, that there isn't a way to get the evaporator core out unless you cut the heater assembly open? Is this how you do it, and then reseal, because I think thats why the Ford Service Manual said they service the entire heater assembly if in fact, the core has to be replaced. Has anyone done this before? let me know thanks!
 
There is little to no information on this but searching around found me some input. As I have thought, it seems that you have to "split" the entire assembly open and reseal it, OR according to another some random ford cougar xr7 site, you can do that OR just cut a provision to get the evaporator core out, and reseal that. When resealed with rtv, epoxy, or whatever you prefer, it is smart to drill in holes and insert screws to hold it altogether firmly.
