? about installing 1.7's on 89 5.0

re: mike ....? about installing 1.7's on 89 5.0

Thanks for the reply...I was wondering if I have to use the shims with my factory valve train? Or if they just bolt in? No I don't know how to check pushrod length but mine are Factory 89 5.0 HO..

You only need the shims if they are too tight. Turn the motor over by hand, when the valve is closed and the pushrod stops moving rotate the crank another inch or two and stop. Remove the old rocker. Put the new rocker on and start to tighten the bolt Slowly spin the pushrod as you tighten the bolt. When the pushrod gets hard to turn you're at 0 lash. At the point it gets hard to turn , the bolt should go a 1/4 to 1/2 turn to get tight. If it goes much further then it's too tight and you need to shim. If the pushrod never gets hard to turn and the rocker has play between the valve and pushrod then it's time for longer push rods. It's easier to do if the intake's off because you can measure preload at the lifter body Most of the time on a stock cam it'll be ok. It's when you've changed cams and the cam has a smaller base lobe that you run into issues. Sometimes changing head gaskets will affect it too. Repeat with each rocker and always make sure the valve is closed before you begin. Try searching for an article on it online you might find pics that will help. Mike

RE: MIKE

I do have the stock Cam lifters, springs and pushrods..Also the head gasket has not been changed..I'm just looking to replace the 1.6 with 1.7's..

I already have the old rockers off,I think I'm just going to try them w/o the shims cause everything else is stock..Do you see anything wrong with me doing that?

Thanks Jay
