Does anybody have any experience with the AFR 165 street heads? I am planning on getting these heads and am not sure what cam and intake combination will work good. I also have 70mm tb, 76 maf, 24lb injectors and 190 lph fuel; pump.

I run the 165's with and Edlebrock Performer, and a Comp Cams XE270hr14 which Comp Cams recommended for my combo. I was planning for a blower down the road, it has worked well both ways, my powerband kicks in at about 3k and with the procharger it's pretty wicked, kinda pulls up to 3k and then with slick drag radials it goes straight to rev limiter in second gear. It worked fine also N/A.

Give Jay Allen a call at www.camshaftinnovations.com. He can cut you a good cam. I'm sure he'll steer you in the right direction for the intake as well. I like the 165's.

I'd go Trick Flow Street Heat intake with the XE270HR Comp Cams camshaft or a custom one if you want to go that route. Can't go wrong custom, though.

Intake

I already purchased the AFR 165 heads and upgrade valve spring kit from Ed Curtis (PS3). My question is what is the best intake to work on this motor? It is a weekend car butI want it to be streetable. I also want to get the most bang out of my combination. I was looking at other combinations with the AFR 165 heads and the Edelbrock RPM intake with the lower ported seems to be a good choice. Some also run the Edelbrock RPM II, but is that too much flow for my heads?

Too much flow for AFR 165 heads? Are you serious? The RPM II is by no means a race manifold, and even though the 165 is the smallest port offered by AFR for a small block ford head application, it will use everything the RPM II can give it. Only if you get into more of a race intake manifold than a street or street/strip manifold, something say...like a Victor 5.0, would I hesitate to bolt it onto a set of AFR 165's.

IMO if you started with ED then why are you here asking us when you have one of the best cam doctors that did your heads. Look at it like this when you go to lunch do you buy a BIG MAC, Burger king fries, and a malt from steak and shake probably not. Same here FTI (ps3) Heads, FTI cam (HR), and buy your intake send it to ED and have him port it to flow with the rest of the combo. Thay IMO is your MOST BANG for this motor.

also if your serious spend the money once and spend it right

I am just looking at what options would be the best bang for my buck. I am confident with the AFR heads, but just want to know what intake will work the best. You mentioned the rpm II is a good choice for these heads. But what type of low to mid power will the intake give me?

Fordmuscle put a set of the 165's on a slightly modded '93 Cobra with impressive results:

That Cobra had a stock cam, ported lower intake, and reached 303 rwhp at 5300 rpm. Pretty impressive.

Was the Cobra cam the same as a 5.0 HO cam or did it have different specs? I'm trying to speed up my project notch by just getting a good basis and was thinking about running the afr 165's with stock cam and a ported Cobra intake. Anyone else running these heads with a stock cam (results?).

1987-1988 H.O. Cam specs: 266/266 adv duration, .444/.444 lift, 115/115 lobe center

1989-1990 H.O. Cam specs: 276/266 adv duration, .444/.444 lift, 116/115 lobe center

1993-1995 cobra cam specs: 270/270 adv duration, .479/.479 lift, 115/121.5 lob center

The cobra cam was also used in some Thunderbird's and Cougars, so it's not exactly a super hot cam.

Ive got AFR 165 heads, an Edelbrock Performer intake and FTI custom ground cam.
As of right now the only thin on the car is the intake though.

I'm running the 165's with a cobra intake on a 306 with a E cam and stock injectors. Great streetability, especially with 5 speed and 373's. I also have 190 lph pump. I think I need to upgrade injectors to get the most, though...

Ask Ed for the 'right' intake, he'll let you know.

He let me 'know' that Performer has a more useable powerband.

I wouldn't get an RPM II personally. It does not match up near as well as the Performer.

If you have talked with Ed Curtis about your heads, I'd be soaking up all the info you can get from him about the rest of the combo.

I've got an Ed curtis/FTI cam for sale over on corral made for AFR165's, edelbrock performer, 570 carb, 1 5/8 longtubes, mac prochamber, 3.73's and an automatic.

It's designed for low-midrange torque (street cam), emissions, economy and idle quality while still bringing out the best of the 165's

Have a look.

im running the 165's with an unported cobra intake and F-303 cam...24# injectors and a 255 pump...runs hard but im sure theres more power to be made by porting the cobra and getting a custom cam.

165's, FTI and Cobra intake

I've talked a little with ED about this setup and like the potential, I was just trying to be cheap and save a little moolah and not messing with a cam. Anyone heard of Ed doing a dual purpose cam, like one that will handle NA then a supercharger later?
