am I outa my league

A friend of mines just put a chevy 454 in his 87 gran prix, they say its mostly stock but it has 11.1 compression, and dome pistons, so he is always talking crap about wanting to race, I was told that the motor should have around 460 hp, I wasnt concerned at first until I found out the compression, so now Im really thinking, with the extra weight of the engine and the car, will I have a chance, or should I just get the bottle and suprise his a@ss.

and I should be pushing around 415hp with heads and intake and other internals, should 1.7 rocker arms, o/f bbk h pipes, hooker 351w swap headers, flow master 3 chambers, and a k&n air cleaner make a difference. I hear a lot of people talk about exhaust and k&n air cleaners dont make anymore hp, is this true.

Yeah, I'm running a carb also. I have dyno sheets to prove the HP gain. In fact, in my case I gain 14 HP with no air cleaner!!!

No matter how good a air cleaner is supposed to be, ALL cleaners / filters restrict incoming air.

Ther has to be gains from a complete aftermarket exhaust system over stock I was led to think 20hp at least and a few with more hp with K&N filters. His car is a big beast but yours is a beast in its own way. He may have a little edge but not that much and a good driver could even the gap more, I would hope you would win, but it's a close call.

thats a good thing to know, man I wanna kick this guys a@s, he thinks all because he has a big block 454 he is untouchable, and no small block ford can touch them, I was going to put a bbf 460 in 95 but didnt wanna go thru the hassels, plus nowadays small blocks can push out more hp than big blocks with the right mods

He has a 350 turbo, not sure about the gears but I dont think anything special, a bg 850 bg carb, and stock headers and flowmasters, the exhaust is cut in the middle of the car, I drove the car last week and it didnt impress me too much, it had hella tq thou, but since I havent drivin my car since december I forgot what tq feels like.

You definitely have a weight advantage. The older GPs are probably close to 750lbs (assuming you've done NOTHING to strip your interior and lighten it which may not be the case) heavier than a Fox mustang. You're at about a 50hp disadvantage but that may be countered by his size. I've personally always preferred the power curve of a small block and that may also work to your advantage.

Bottom line is: Tough to say. Drive your car like you stole it, and let us know how it goes down! Good luck.
