AN IDEA! is it crazy, stupid, pointless, or..?

for people with a lot of practice pulling motors: how fast can you pull a EFI motor, computer, and H-pipe. and then get a diff engine put in and running?(5spd)less then a day?

reason i ask is, if someone were to remove his completely stock engine and replace it with a fully built engine. would it be possible to pull the "built" enigne/computer out every other year and put the stock engine, computer, and cats back on for the smog test?
i know this could be done but i want to know how fast it can be done.
maybe extream just for smog but.... if you have massive heads cam ect your never driving it on the street in M.A.
i need a street driven car.
i dunno, let me know what ya think.

me and a friend have pulled many carbed motors out of his camaro and had them back running within a day...but it would take longer for an efi motor

it took me and a friend around 2 hours (maybe longer) to pull the motor out of my '86 the last time we removed it...and that was busting ass

Dead on.

I pulled my motor/trans
took an hour for lunch
removed the trans
put the block on a stand
replaced the oil pump

7 hrs and 45 min later I was starting the car for a little test drive.
I was screwing around a little, and I may have actually fallen asleep under the car for a couple of minutes.
I've lost count of how many times I have pulled the motor though, so I have had some practice.

Can it always be done that fast?
HELL NO
I would plan to spend a full weekend on it, just so you don't miss a work day or something.

yeh i knew a lot of you guys could pull it off in about a day or less. ive never done it and to be honest, im kinda chicken sh** cuz i dont wanna make somthing worse and get in a bind. everytime i have a problem or a bolt breaks, my father gives me a hard time, and says i dont have enough experience to be trying this stuff.
so how do you get experience????
by sitting in the garage looking at the engine untill im 40 years old? i bet then i would be real good at it. you know cuz i would be 40 and all. i love some peoples logic.
im good at the things i have done a bunch of times, i wanna get to that point with engines like you guys.
im doing my headers at the moment and so far no speed bumps, all is going well. also, I have decided to replace the motor mounts at the same time since i removed the driver side header and saw how much room i have.

well, sometimes you just have to learn by doing it. your father i'm sure went through the same "growing pains", and while he might be trying to "save you some face", you just have to figure out some things by yourself. you'll get your experience in...with a bunch of knowledgable people like the ones on this site maybe YOUR trip won't be as "painful", lol

It took my cousin and I do to an automatic V6 swap to 5 speed 5.0L in an SN95 12 hours including the diff swap, pedal assembly, wires, exhaust, etc...

I have an h/c/i on my car with a supercharger and i had to go through emissions in arizona no cats nothing headers into an h pipe into flow 40's. to pass the sniffer it was 12.00 for carbon monoxide. I had a b303 cam which is not emissions legal. Went through hit like a 36.43 ran the car down to like 1 or 2 gallons of gas. Then mixed about 3 gallons of denatured alcohol with a gallon of gas poured it in the tank went back through and a did a 12.04. So just try different mixtures till you pass emissions the only thing you need to worry about is i forget what it is hydro carbons or nitro levels i forget they go up with more alcohol.

that usually turns it into a day and half when you have one friend with you and 36 beers. All that does it makes it SEEM like its going by faster. lol but it took me 2 days to pull engine, put it on the stand replace all the bearing, head gaskets, and such, new clutch, H pipe, headers...get it back in a running.

me and a buddy pulled a carbd 6 cyln engine and tranny out of a 64 falcon in 45 min. We never put it pack in (v8 went in its place) but I bet we could have got it back in in about an hour.

well I havent pulled a mustang motor.

But Me and a friend pulled an engine, transand harness out of 95 Mazda 969 and put a new crate motor in it in about 6 hours.

The idea isn't to try and work fast, but to work smart and efficient. The harder you try to force it the harder the job will be. Just like anything in life.
Make a solid plan in your head, or even better write it out. Break the job down into smaller tasks. Also, keep in mind that some jobs can be done concurrently. For example, while the fluids are draining you can be breaking loose the front accessories, OR while removing the exhaust you should also be removing the trans mount, and pulling the drivline free (the goal in this case should be to crawl under the car one time).

But in response to the philosophy of your question...
I would work harder toward building a car that can pass emissions. There are benefits. Not having to give up a weekend is one of them.

Me and my buddy Kyle pulled his engine out of his 95 and put a reman. engine back in its place in three days and had it running, that was 3 DAYS, all day working. So, why dont you just find you a car thats emissions exempt for your state, isn't like a car that older than 25 years or something like that exempt? Build one of those cars and you wont have to worry about it.
