if the 85 has factory A/C you need to pull the whole dashboard, if it doesnt you can get it from the glove box

I just did my 86GT with A/C and you have to pull the dash out to get to all the bolts and to be able to drop the unit out. You also have to discharge the A/C unit if your A/C works. It is a pain in the arse, but there is no way around it.

I have some pictures of my dash out too if you wanna see.

It can be done without discharging the AC if it`s still working.

Bend the accumulator mounting brackets forward for the extra clearance.
www.50stangs.com has an article on this done on a 86 GT with AC.

I`ve replaced two on my 89 with AC over the years and it`s a major pita.

thanks for the link post 8950ho, that's my site

http://www.50stangs.com/techarticles/heatercore.html

there is the actual link. It doesn't go through dash removal, but that's the easy part. You can actually just unbolt the dash and swing it down out of the way, no need to unwire the entire thing.

the non a/c cars have an entirely different heater box on the firewall, hence the easier access and different removal procedure.
