Another 351 Cleveland !!

Well yesterday I acquired another 351C . Nice to know they're still out there. This one was a 351CJ, but the guy who I traded for it swapped the heads and intake long ago. It had one 351C head and one 351M head, plus a 2 bbl intake. The short block though was the gem. It hasn't been touched since it left Ford back in june of 72. Still std bore, cast flattops. Even had the original nylon coated timing gear on the cam, which surprisingly still had all it's teeth. The chain however had enough slack in it to let it jump time. Bore's are worn slightly, looks like they'll clear with a 30-40 overbore easily. Haven't pulled the bearing caps, but nothing's loose there, so I suspect the crank should be OK too. I don't have any plans for this one so I may just sell it or keep it, who knows?

That's cool! Congrats on the find.

Hopefully it won't have to be bored so much as your estimate. I've heard a lot about how thin the castings are, plus core shift can be an issue.

What do the rockers look like? On one of my two junkyard Clevelands, several of the aluminum guides came apart and big chunks were in the oil pan.

That is pretty cool, that you can still find them out there. I can't decide what to do with mine when I swap in my 390. I want to hold on to it, and possibly use it in a future project.

The rockers look OK, but as far as the aluminum fulcrums, I always toss those in the scrap bucket. If I need more fulcrums, the late 70's to 82 351M/400's and the 370 truck motors had the better iron or steel ones.

Want to sell one of the timing chain covers? Mine is rusted pretty bad and kinda warped, prev owner took a hammer to it?

You can source a newer cover from a 351M/400. The one I have with this Cleveland is the only one I have currently. The 351M/400 cover is the same.

My name is Jimmy and I have a question about the CLeveland I hope you can help me with. I have a 351c w/4bbl heads on it. I bought a 4 or 5 years ago from a guy that had it rebuilt, just never ran. He changed his mind before installing it in something. It has according to him a "fairly stock rebuild" done to it, it has just sat since reassembly. Can you tell where to find a identification number on it so I can get some history? A guy wants to buy it from me and I was wondering if you could help me with a current market price. It is complete with an aluminum intake that has "Shelby" cast into the top, stock exhaust manifolds, and a c6 flywheel attached. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

The casting #'s for the block are above the starter. The head #'s are inside the valve covers. Both the 2 and 4 bbl heads have a 2 or 4 cast into the head next to the valve cover in one corner. As for which 4 bbl heads yours has, that's going to depend on the casting number. The whole price will depend on what parts are there. The Shelby intake is a plus.

Thanks, I will try to get the numbers off of it today and take a couple of pics and post them. I saw on ebay a ratty 2bbl cleveland that suppposedly runs but was never started according to the description. His starting bid was $1000, so I know mine is well worth more than that. It would just need freshening up to be installed since everything was new since the rebuild.

The pictures I took are too large to upload, so I will need to try them again. If anyone has any tips on compressing my pics to get them on here, that would be a huge help. So if you can tell me what the motor is and what it came out of would be great. I forgot to take the valve cover off to get the head number, but I will get that.

D2AE-CA is a std 2 bolt main block. Got the same one in my shop. ( the one that started this thread) As for that ebay starting bid of $1000, that's just that......... a starting bid. Bet he doesn't get any bidders What it's worth is what someone's willing to pay for it. Not what the seller thinks it's worth. There are lots of Cleveland parts for sale out there on the net. They're not getting any more plentiful, and can be hard to find in your neck of the woods, but are out there. I sold a complete 2 bolt, 2 bbl headed one last year for $700. And it had an Edelbrock intake, TRW forged pistons.
