over spring break i installed afr heads, an fti cam, a pioneer balancer, comp pro mag 1.6 rockers, and some other stuff. this was my first time getting that deep into the motor, and i ran into several problems, but when it was time to turn the key, she started. i was pretty happy.

things aren't perfect, though. i didn't have a timing light around when i finished, so i couldn't get it perfect. also, my fuel pressure gauge adapter got delayed in shipping (i couldn't find one within a 50 mile radius), so i couldn't adjust the fuel pressure properly.

the car won't idle. it runs fine if it is kept above 1200 or so rpm. it only starts under wide open throttle, too. i took it for a drive, and it died a couple times. once, it died and wouldn't start for about 10 minutes. i'm told the starting problems probably mean the timing is off, which it most likely is. i think once i'm back home for summer and i get the fuel pressure and timing adjusted, it will run well. do you think this will fix my idle problem, too? i'm planning on getting a tweecer in any case.

i was amazed how easily the pioneer balancer went on. after reading about people having lots of trouble and even having to put there balancers in the oven to get them on, mine slid on with almost no effort. it took a matter of seconds.

my power locks don't work after the project, and when i hit the unlock button, my gauge lights turn on. could a bad ground cause this? i noticed i had a ground wire hanging when i changed the oil after the cam break-in. the interior light and the clock don't work, either. i would assume it's a fuse, but the whole gauge lights turning on by hitting the unlock button makes me think otherwise.

too bad i couldn't get a real feel for the new power i should have because of my timing and fuel issues. i finished at 8:30 sunday night and flew back to school monday morning at 9:35. i can't wait to get back home this summer!!

Congrats man...I know the feeling of accomplishment.

The car not idling seems to be a common symptom of putting in a larger cam in the 94-95 cars. I drove my car for a couple hundred miles and bumped the idle up to about 900rpm and now it never dies or surging idle...downside is that the idle is at 900rpm though

Very strange about the electrical gremlins...did you pull your motor or do everything with the motor in the car? I pulled my engine and I believe there was only one or two ground wires...so it wasn't a big deal to get those put back on.

Congratulations Greg, we'll have to meet up at Rock Falls in Wisconsin this summer.

I'm in the middle of an FTI cam swap, did you degree your cam in at all? How was your piston to valve clearance?

If you have to hold the pedal down to start it, I'd bet you are running too much FP. When you hold down the gas pedal when starting the car, the EEC actually cuts the pulsewidth back. You can solve this with the twEECer as well by cutting the puslewidth over time during engine startup cranking.

Did you use a pushrod checker? What size did you end up running? Congrats, looks good. Are you on tcstangs.com? I know the cities is a little hike from where you are, but you should think about heading down for a few events this summer.

PAUL! Where were you when I had my starter problem... running 50psi of FP is probably my main problem.

Congrats on the head install... ever find yourself asking where the h3ll one of the bolts went or where something plugged into when putting it back together? Any spare bolts left over (less weight )

94dreamgt,
thanks, it does feel good! did you adjust the idle on the throttle body? i know that's not supposed to be a permanent solution, so it's one reason why i'm getting a tweecer. i didn't pull the motor, but i did have to disconnect some things to get everything out of the way.

zenboy,
rock falls is quite a trip! we'll see once i get the car tuned! i did degree the cam, but the dot to dot turned out to be right where i wanted it, so no adjustment was necessary. i didn't check the p-v clearance since the combo is sooo common and ed (curtis) sold me the whole combo. i trusted him on it.

killer,
thanks for the insight. like i said, i have no idea what fuel pressure i'm running. i installed a set of 24# injectors, a pro-m 77mm calibrated for them, and an afpr, but my 255 l/hr pump is still in the shed. i'll be putting that on as soon as i get home.

jake,
ed did a mock up before he sent out the package (i bought the heads, rockers, and almost everything else from him), and he said that stock would be fine, so i just got stock length hardened pushrods. i'm not on tcstangs, but i'll check it out. it would be fun to head down there this summer. not to many stang enthusiasts near fargo.

1105,
haha, yeah, i often found myself thinking, "where the hell did this bolt come from??" i did have a few extra, but i used arp head bolts and new bolts for the performer, so i think i'll be ok.

anyone know the weight savings of the afrs compared to the e7s?

also, one of the exhaust bolt holes had a really messed up thread. i couldn't even put a bolt in it when i had the exhaust manifold out of the way. i wasted at least an hour or so on that one.

all in all, the project was easier than i thought it would be, even though it did take me a whole week. i learned a lot, too. too bad i can't enjoy the fruits of my labor for a couple months...

any more thoughts on the locks not working and the gauge lights turning on?

Greg, Did Ed do any "work" on your heads or are the box stock? How much are those Engine Werks pushrods?

Thanks

Hey Greg

Good to see that you got your go fast stuff on the car!

It will take a little bit of time to sort all of the little stuff after a big upgrade like that.

It can be frustrating but it will be worth it for sure.

As for the electrical gremlins, I would look for a loose connector or a wire that has been placed in a bind and is shorting out to ground.

a lot of dough.

jake,
i didn't have ed do any porting. the engineworks hardened pushrods were $112.

grady,
thanks once again for the kind words. i made it through with a little help from the search button. my brother actually gave me a good amount of guidance as he did his first headswap last summer. i'm sure i'll get the electrical problems figured out once i get under the hood again. then, once she's tuned, i hope to reproduce your torque/power curves!

Any reason why you went with the 7/16" studs and roller rockers? Are they really that much stronger/better? I think I'm going to be buying ARP studs either way because AFR reccomended that I do that if I use Comp Cams Pro Mags, because the ARP stud is a little taller. Everything fit under the stock valve covers okay?

jake,
ed recommended the bigger studs. don't know if they are necessary, but i took his word for it. i went with the comp pro mags because, according to ed, they are the only rockers that fit under the stock valve covers, and i didn't want to worry about new vcs that fit the bigger rockers and go under the throttle body. ed was right, they do fit under the stock valve covers. i don't have any noise at less than 1/2 throttle, so they aren't hitting. i hear a little noise on the driver's side at higher throttle, so i might adjust the driver's side rockers when i get home.

Congrats on the install. I'm sure with a little time you'll get all of the bugs worked out. I'm going to be doing the same thing this June. Can't wait to see what kind of trouble I'll be getting myself into then.

hoofnit,
thanks. this site and corral were great resources. pretty much every question raised during the project was solved by doing a couple searches. there are a lot of people on the forums (including myself) who will gladly answer any questions you may have. good luck!

I just bought Summits camshaft degreeing kit for $86, Jegs has one too for ~$90. The Comp Cams kit is ~$135 but comes with an instruction video.

no joke! i am planning mine now. i am going to go with a Thumper combo ($900), my stock intake and injectors (for now). it better end up being a whole lot less than $3800! but then again, i won't make nearly the tq or hp either, at least until i can upgrade the other stuff...
