Did my tuneup 2 weeks ago. During the process, I advanced my timing based on what I'd read on here. Car was set at 10 degrees; I read on here recommendations to advance it to 12, as well as some comments that people had advanced even farther. I wound up advancing to 14 degrees. It's been running great, and I haven't noticed any adverse effects, but thought I'd double check with the experts--what does too much advance act like?

For further info, I'm running a stock cam and heads, but have an MSD 6AL box and MSD coil.

Should I leave it as is, or back it down to 12?

Thanks,
Greg

If you advance your timing too far you'll usually hear a pinging noise from the engine, particularly at higher RPM's. If you go REALLY far, you'll lose some power and likely get worse gas mileage. Each engine has different limits, so you'll have to find out what yours is by experimentation. A lot of people advance to 14-16 btdc.

Several things to consider

The values in the spark table at mid load are very high

When you twist the dizzy past 10 you add that amount to those values

Another thing is ... if you run low grade gas you may hear the ping thing

As said above ... just listen for the marbles in the can thing

If heard .......
You up the grade of gas
or
Back down the spark
