Any suggestions on heads/cam or top end for rebuild?

I'm going to be rebuilding the 289 in my Mustang since it's blowing a lot of oil through the 7th cylinder. I would like to bump the power to around 300 hp if possible too. What heads/cam combos have some of you had luck with? Also, what intake and carb? I have about $1500-2000 to spend on parts and will have about the same to do the rebuild. Also, my current setup is a 100% stock D-code 289.

I'd go with the Edelbrock RPM package. It's already matched to work together. I think the 600 cfm carb, Edelbrock RPM intake, and the Edelbrock RPM cam make around 320 HP. If you can come up with the money for a set of heads, you should see 360+ rwhp.

My next question is would a Holley 600 cfm double pumper be enough carb for the RPM setup? I've had a brand new one sitting in the back of my garage for the past 5 years. I'm at high altitude too. (Denver, CO) I was wondering if I should go up to a 650, or maybe a Demon 625.

I am pretty sure the 360+ RWHP is a typo- thats about the most you will see at the block-assuming its perfectly tuned.

I have the RPM package w/ Trickflow heads & 750 carb. My car just dynoed at 275 RWHP & 269 RWTQ which is about 345HP at the crank or so. Needs some fine tuning, but I should be able to get another 10-20 more HP out of it.

My first combo before I put the heads on was in your budget -I had the block bored and a 3-angle valve job done on the stock heads -cost $700, a Summit rebuild kit with forged pistons - cost $350, Edelbrock rpm cam lifters & springs, intake, 750 carb, fuel & water pump, and timing chaine-all for about $750. I assembled and blueprinted everything myself -the motor cost less then $2,000. The car dynoed then at 230RWHP & 250RWTQ- just shy of 300 HP at the flywheel.


Add another $1300 for the heads and roller rockers on my current setup.

You're right, it should have read fwhp. I was just taking the specs off of the Edelbrock website. But I'm sure they had that engine tuned to the max.

The 600 should be good until you add some high flow heads.
