anyone ever done an egine swap? need tips

next week in my Automotice Service class, me and two other classmates will be swapping an engine and tranny from a Ford Probe into a Mazda 626. has anyone ever swapped an engine/tranny before and have any suggestions? we need to figure out a way to clearly mark every hose, line, wire, etc so we can get everything running again. we want things to go as smoothly as possible. also, does anyone happen to know the flat rate of an engine swap on a mazda 626? you would need ALLDATA for the info if anyone pays for it

Masking tape and a felt tip marker. That's what I use to mark hoses and what not.

but how do you mark from the car to the new engine? just look to see where everything goes? and do you write a number 1 on the car side and a number 1 on the new engine? or do you mark connections on the old engine, pull it out, and then compare it to the new one?

One of the best things I do when I work on engines is take ALOT of pictures. angles and where wiring/tubes go. Also the tape-marker is always good. If you know cars and know where what tube goes to what you shouldn't have a problem. Study the engine bays and link up what go to what on each enigne. BTW they are both ford engines.

ummm so I guess just cutting the whole thing outa the other car with a torch isn't in your plan?
No really I've never had an easy headache free swap. I would do the pictures (make one person that their responsiblity) label everything (anothers) and also a clip board with some rude sketches/ descriptions.
Since there will be 3 of you all I suggest you each take one of the above area to focus on. Otherwise if you all get like me and my friends and start thrashing to get it apart and back together something one would have remembered they aren't on that side going back in.
Also I'm sure you all know anything that could break proably will if you leave it on there (dist caps love to break).
Also if you are in a shop class you should have the manuals available they should list the amount of hours the job calls for in them along with all the nice pictures to look at and such.

yeah, we've got a huge libray of refrences in the attic area, but over the years students would use a book, and not replace it in its spot. so its just a mess up there. and yeah, we have ALLDATA, but i wont be able to use it until the next class, which is when we start the swap. im gonna see about getting a poloroid camera to snap some pics, thanks for all the tips everyone

btw Tom, what kinda MM swaybar do you have for sale? is it the front one? i still need an aftermarket front swaybar.

It's a rear, I havent seen an aftermkt swaybar out. Would be pointless to change cause it's solid, just switching out the Bushings is a must though.

i do need to swap out a bunch of bushings. any good sites that sell packages? will check MM of course
