Anyone recognize which trans this is

Builders typically need the flywheel and clutch assembly to balance. He can most likely check the index on the bell housing so just call him and ask.
 
Look at it this way. To ship it to your builder in Texas will cost what a decent magnetic dial indicator will cost and you get to learn a new skill. Once you figure out how to dial one in you will realize its not very hard.

That should work. You end up putting the magnetic end on the fly wheel and get the dial indicator tip on the inside lip of the register hole where the trans installs. Roll the motor over by hand and see how much it deviates from side to side. I usually mark 12:00, 1:30, 3:00, 4:30, 6:00, 7:30, 9:00, &10:30 on the bell housing and then at these locations mark what the dial indicator reads. There are some videos out there that show how to do this.

When I put the SROD bell housing in my T-Bird it was well within tolerance as it the T5 bell housing in my Coupe. The Lakewood bell that I had in the T-Bird was all kinds of out of whack and it ended up in a metal recycling bin due to that and just battling long tube headers around it. SROD bell solved all those problems.

I've never indexed a transmission in my life. I unbolt the thing to do what I gotta do and bolt it back up when I'm done.

For these transmissions that require this: If I understand this right, you index the trans to find the center position. Now... Once that is done, how does it [keep] that position? I mean, you index the thing then remove it for install, right? How does that work?
 
My " understanding" is Muncie's, T10's, and T 5's all use a ball bearing front bearing that will allow more play..
The tremec's requiring " indexing" now use tapered roller bearings which do NOT allow for much play...

that's acutally the vid I watched. I've never used a dial before either so I'll have to familiarize myself. Worse case is I get some someone over to help who's done it before or know the scope of it. Far from that though as sending parts now to the builder

When you do it one-time (use the dial, I mean) you'll wonder how it could be so simple and seem like voodoo before. LoL
 
It's done when you bolt up your exact bellhousing. It would need to stay attached once properly indexed. If removed, need to remeasure.
some of the vids I watched they removed after indexing and then had to re install. I don't believe I saw where they re measuered after installing the adjustable dowels

so the tremec's are the one that require's indexing because of not much allowance for play?
 
Well, I'll be... I had to open my yapper and say I didn't recognize it, but I see it now. Not sure what threw me off... and yeah, back in the day they sold the lakewood bellhousings for 'em in red like that, and I had one of the gold-ish McLeod Bellhousings.

Once you index a bell housing to a block and install the offset dowels you can pull it and reinstall it all you want. Makes no sense that you would have to reindex it every time you removed it being you index with the flywheel only so you have to remove it to install the clutch setup.

After doing the T56 without indexing, I wonder how often a problem is severe enough to result in premature failure. Been going for a couple years now... maybe 20k miles.

If you read this and had a failure due to trans indexing, please report.
