Have a question about screw in freeze plugs. Are they worth putting in?? Buddy gave me a set and I am about to send my block off to the machine shop. What are the benefits to the screw in plugs? Do they help strengthen the block or are they there so not to blow out a press in one?

Yes they help add a little support to the side walls but on a stock block they really are not worth the expense, depends what the shop charges. I have the taps and dies and they were Expensive.

I like the screw in plugs on race motors, blowing a freeze plug out when your doing 100mph+ isn't pretty.

Thanks Rick!

I am freshening my motor while it is out for the new project and ,that's what I was wondering, if they were worth the extra expense of getting the block tapped for it. A shop around here charges $100 to tap the block. And for now I do plan on using a stock block, unless I do break down an buy a sportsman block. And that a big IF, at this moment. Would like the added strength of a sportsman block, but hate the cost with machine work. But if I do go with the sportsman, it will get the screw in plugs..

Are you talking about the FORD Sportsman block? Save your nickels and dimes man. They aren't worth the additional expense.

Man that is just too much out of my budget. This is mainly a street car and may see the track 4 or 5(max) times a year..

I've heard reference lately, to a new block produced by FMS that supposed to be a lot less expensive than a DART but a hell of allot more stout than anything Ford has ever put out in a 302. Anybody know of or have a link for the block I'm referring to?

Andrew pricing will be in the high $1500's from what I hear , and it still will not touch what a DART Sportsman has to offer.

I don't really know. I've never laid eyes on the thing. The rumor I'd heard was that it was supposed to be a beefier version of their Sportsman block and was to replace the Sportsman block. Rick's got his ear much closer to the ground than I do for that sort of thing.

I just got the latest FRPP catoalog from Tommie Vaughn here in Houston. I was going to get a stock block pistons, a crank and timing chain. But, now you can only get the complete crate motor only. I did see in the catalog however, the mention of a Boss 302 block. 4 bolt main caps, revised oil and water passages and more. But you only get the block.

Anybody seen these?

There was not a mention of the price in the catalog. But, it says that it will be up for sale in by mid - year. It's the first I've heard of it and I visist a lot of performance sites. I can't find any ionfo other than what's in the catalog.
