I am thinking about supercharging my 87 gt. But there are a few questions i have. How well will the supercharger run with my speed density setup? Will it work with stock injectors. Im chaning the fuel pump already anyway. Is there anything i should know? Pros Cons? The reason i shyed away from doing a H/C/I is because id have to convert to mass air which i plan to do in the future after we restore my 67. How would the supercharger work with 2.73 gears? Would i need to up to 3.73? This car is going to be daily driven, so what do you guys think?

Edit: Also how will the supercharger affect my gas mileage? How many psi am i able to run on my motor? (stock, cobra intake, 130,000 miles, perfect compression test )

First you need to settle on how much power you intend to produce then where in your powerband you want to produce that power. Centrifugals are the best at producing peak power rating at higher RPMs while screw types typically don't have as high of a peak but increase power across jsut about the whole RPM range.

first off, you will need to change to mass air if you install a supercharger unless you are very familiar with tuning the car with a tweecer or PMS. Without mass air, it won't run right without a custom tune on the car. A mass air conversion is so easy to do anyway. It took me an hour and a half to run 4 wires from the engine to the EEC and do the wiring.

As for the injectors, you can use the stock injectors with a supercharger, however, you will need a Fuel management unit. The more boost you're running with an FMU the higher your fuel pressure will be when your in the boost. I'm not a fan of running fmu's with s-trims, but an fmu and stock injectors with an SC-trim (A-trim) would be safe. It's all up to you though.

You can certainly run a blower with speed density. I wasn't sure myself, but through a little research, and a little help on here, I found that Vortech even sells a little check valve to put in place for SD setups so the computer continues to run right. Sure, if you get extreme with things it may require more -- but for just bolting on the blower that is all that is needed. The kit should be complete with everything you need to get strated except the extra check valve.

BTW -- This only applies to Vortech, I haven't looked into other companies to see fi they offer it, but I'm sure it would work the same regardless.

i really feel that the supercharger is the way to go in my situation. Because i was reading on ProCharger.com that under normal throttle conditions the gas mileage will be basically the same, which is excellent because this is going to be my daily drive til my 67 gets done being restored, and im going to be driving it to school on the highway etc. When you get on it of course it will use more fuel. So i really feel; that the supercharger would be the way to go. Those of you that have them.. How do you like them? What one would you reccommend? How much psi can i run safely? How fast do you think it would make me in the 1/4 mile? i run 14.6 now with 2.73 gears

If you want peak power, go with a Centrifugal of your liking (i.e. Vortec, ATI). If you want blower power across the whole RPM range starting at just off idle, go with a Kenne Bell. Either way, you can run them all on SD as easily as you can on mass air. I do suggest however, that you also invest in a wideband 02 reader, fuel pressure guage, and boost-vac guage. Those 3 things take all the guess work out of tuning. A Boost-a-pump of some sort also makes for easy tuning. Especially if you plan to run the stock fuel pump. It gives you fuel supply adjustability where before there was none.

what supercharger do you reccomend? i really dont want a powerdyne even though they are cheaper. What amount of boost can i safely run on my stock motor so i dont blow it up. I am really considering a vortec but i dunno where to start because i dont know how much psi my engine can take.

I run 9 lbs of boost from my KB on 91 octane gas (so there's room for more) with no detonation problems. 5litermustangGT is running a Vortec with 8 lbs of boost and no intercooler. He had pinging problems with his stock fuel pump but after upgrading things smoothed out (until the blower gave up on him). I'd recommend 6 lbs from a centrifugal to start with and get it tuned well, 7lbs with a KB. Once you're sure all is well, you can always change the pulley size once you decide there's room for more boost. So long as you keep the motor from detonation, I think you'll be pleased with the result. Additional wear on your motor will largely be determined by how good the tune is and how much you beat the crap out of the motor once everything is installed.

So which supercharger would you reccomend for me? Im going to go to the track on weekends in the summer to run, im hoping to make it into the high 12's if thats possible. I plan to rebuild this motor after my 67 resto is done.

The reason I went with the KB is because my car is a daily driver and I wanted that power on demand. If your car is a second vehicle and not your grocerie getter then go with a centrifugal. They have a reputation for making more top end power. I'm partial to the KB (which is why I bought it). 12s is going to be piece of cake no matter which way you go unless you've got hard compound cookie cutter tires on your Stang. If you go with a KB, I'd recommend spending the extra money and getting the Blowzilla. That way if you ever decide to go with more motor you won't have to worry about buying the blower again. For centrifugals, my vote would be ATI with a 3 core air to air cooler. Be advised that ATI does not have a reputation for great customer technical support where Vortech for the most part, does. I bought my KB from Kennedy's Dynotune. Bob Kennedy will answer any question you could possibly think of concerning your install and was instrumental in helping me to get it tuned over the phone. It also ended up being a couple hundred dollars cheaper than buying it from Kenne Bell. He will also tell you what other items you will need to complete a great install. Listen to what he says. He never tried to seel me junk I didn't need. I followed his advise and it made things much easier.
