I installed a B&M ripper shifter in my 90 5.0 about 4 years ago. recently it has been a real pita to get it into gear sometimes. is there anything i can do as far as maintenance to improve this? most times it slides right in with ease, but other times it feels like i'm trying to pound a square peg into a round hole.

If you have removed the cotter pin that holds the release lever, that could be your problem. I've had 2 of these shifters, and both have been a PITA. Had to replace & modify the cotter pin to get it to go all the way down into 1st. It would stop at drive and not ratchet into the lower gears.
You might also want to verify your cable is not in a bind somewhere.
