So yeah I know the track heat/street kit says 350/360 not really loving it though. I have my eyes on AFR185,Holly Sys, and a Custom Cam. After this is done I will save up for a while then stroke it to a 331. But that is probably a year away have to built up the rearend. Only mods are my exhaust right now. I have SFC Underbody struts and all "new" suppesion done like 10 year ago lol by my Father, the struts and shocks are yellow.. No clue whos they are.

That's a great combo. Good luck with your build.

I don't think you can use 185's with a stock shortblock.
More like 165's.

I believe you are correct. I think you have to notch the pistons to make it work.

Yeah I know this but I think the 140$ to notch them is worth having the 185. I know I cannot just bolt on 185s. I'm planning for the future also with these to go with a it stroked to 331.

I think u can go with larger heads if u go with TFS and not have to worry about notching the pistons. Might be another option.

No, it's not worth it.
I've been there and done that.
The tool alone was like $140, then you must disassemble the head, insert the tool, set the head, bring the piston to the top, notch the piston, check clearance to be sure then repeat over and over not getting a single ounce of metal in the engine.

While it sounds simple, bear in mind you just told us you had trouble installing the exhaust headers.
On a difficulty scale the headers are a 2 out of 10.
Notching the pistons are at least a 7.5 of 10.

What is it about the trick flow package you don't like. They make some really nice stuff. And they're heads work every bit as well as the AFR's.

first what is your budget, second what do you expect/ want from the car. if are serious about doing a stroker in a year the smaller heads may not be enough. i would do your rear, with gears, and keep saving for your stroker instead of spending and working twice.

Im not doing any of this work. Reason I had trouble with the headers is because they were stock and rusted as a mother and all I had was a simple socket kit and PB blaster. Then the stock H-pipe wasn't lining up so the car being on ramps was kinda difficult for me using my knee to line up the pipe with headers and guiding the flang and trying to screw at the same time lol. But once I had people to help it went fairly quickly. But I wouldnever dream of messing with the engine or a tranny. Rick91GT would be installing all this stuff for me and also doing the notching.

and about stroking it to 331, are you saing 185 would be to small?

I wouldn't say it's "not worth it". IMHO, buying an AFR 165 in this day and age is more "not worth it".

I guess I'm more of the mindset of doing it right, even if it takes more effort and more time. Limiting the direction of your engine build because of speed bumps such as valve notch size is a cop out.

An AFR 185 is not necessarily "too small" for a 331/347, but bear in mind there are probably better choices out there, and those better choices probably include larger heads.

What would be a better head, and would it be to much for a stock 302 for the time being.

I'd go with a set of AFR 205's or Trick Flow Track Heat 190 or 205's on a decent sized stroker. Bigger displacement engines, have the ability to uitiize better breathing heads while still retaining great drivability.

This is the question I aim to answer with my build.

Nice reads on your thread so far. I am probably the same as you I got the money sitting just everytime I'm about to buy I am like wait... I am trying to take people advice and plan for the future. I'm actually probably in the process of moving back to cali and just might say **** it keep the cobra stock beside cai and exhaust and just buy a nother 91-93 gt hatch and work on that or something. Or just anything with a good body and move to my father and use his equipement and garges and build a car with him. I wanna go forward with the hci and then stroke it but I know my Rear end is probably ****. I just don't really wanna put a few grand in my rear end then work on hci and stroking years later down the road..

Another option would be get the trick flow top end kit and when u decide to step up to a stroker u can send the heads to TEA and get the 205 CNC program run on them. Add a custom cam and ur in business!
