Hey all!! Im brand new to this site and wanted to give some backround before I start. I drive a 2001 mustang gt convertible automatic which I sometimes race!! It has 68,000 miles on it and about a week ago it started giving me the o/d light flash. Its got basic bolt ons and 3.73 gears with an sct 91 octane tune. I got it dyno tuned and it put out 242rwhp and 277 torque. So I check the code it threw and it came out to be P0782 which is 2-3 upshift malfunction. I had the tune for 2 weeks before this so I dont think the tune did it. Anyways I take it to a tranny place by my house and he said I have leaks from the front pump and a couple of other leaks. He recommended a full re-seal on the whole tranny so he pulled it out. This was yesterday morning. He then called me today and said after he inspected everything I had burnt clutches!!!! Isn't it a little early for that because I kinda find it funny now it went from a $500 job to I need a whole tranny rebuild and he told me to come in on monday morning because he was gonna get a price on the rebuild. Soooo I did some research of my own and found that the rebuild kits are not that badly priced!! my question is however, what rebuild kits are the best there are??? I want durability because this is the last time I wanna spend this much on my car for a while. I was also interested in the J-mod but do any rebuild kits come with a j-mod valve body??? Any help would be appreciated because to be honest I wouldn't know if the clutch looks burnt or even if they came outta my car......

That seems kind of fishey. I was making well over 450rwhp on my car before my tranny went out and then it never really went out on me. I also raced my car quite a bit also. I can't imagine all the clutches being burnt up on a close to stock car.

I had my transmission rebuilt and overhauled along with a stall and HD tranny cooler fo around $3500 IIRC.

Fenrir559:

I think it could indeed be caused by the tune. The other possibility is the 2-3 accumulator getting stuck in the bore. But, since the tune was applied just a couple of weeks before the code popped up, I am still leaning towards the tune. Call your tuner and tell him about the problem. If your fluid is still bright red and does not smell burnt (and it just smells like ATF) then it is highly unlikely that the clutches are burnt.

IF you need a rebuild kit, then +1 for 'dirtyd0g'. The other shop that is excellent with 4R70
W's is BC-Automotive.com and talk to Darrin (he owns the business/company).

HTH,

Thanks For the info guys!!! I have to go tomorrow to the shop and see my car. Wish me luck!!!! Im also gonna contact my tuner and have him set the timing down a couple of degrees, maybe that will help. Im also gonna look into a tranny cooler. Thanks Again for everyone who wrote!!

bc-automotive make great trannys for these cars. The weak point in the 4r70w is the imput shaft and the clutch's are ok but not great. Major cause of these tranny's breaking is wide open throttle into overdrive and downshifting over drive to 2nd gear. Even with an aftermarket tranny I wouldn't do either I just mention. I learned the hardway.
