hi to all, what do you think is the best single "power" producing mod, gears not included, just bolt on's that add power ..eg: headers, cams, heads...
thanks in advance...

Man, that's a loaded question. Here are my thoughts:

Pullies
- $150
- Installation $50
- 5 - 8 hp

Headers
- $400 - $800
- Installation $500
- 15 hp

Cat Back
- $250 - $500
- easy to install
- 5 - 10 hp

X Pipe
- $150 - $400
- $80 install
- 15 hp

Cams
- $600
- $700 install
- 15 - 25 (depending on cam)

Heads
- $800 - $2000 (can have stock ones ported or get new)
- $500 install (can do for cheap when having cams done though)
- 40 - 60 hp depending on year of car and head selection

Doing heads/cams and getting a tune is the best combo for the most power besides a blower or nitrous. But figure on $2000 - $3000 or more.

I am installing nitrous next week. I bought a nice kit for $560 bucks, will get about 100 hp and can do it safely. There are also horror stories with heads and cams too. Bad tune for example, bad springs, poor idle. Anytime you touch the car you have some level of risk.

i would go with a turbo setup for ($2,000 for the piping, $500 for the turbo, $500 for the tune) for the most HP and reliability.

Or the cheapest and easiest, a mid pipe.

i would think that cams and a tune make more power than anyother single mod followed by a full exhaust.
here is a thread about vt stage 2 cams on a stock 00 gt and a tune by cobra killer.
28 peak hp and 50rwhp at 6k rpms

03trueblue(plenum king) has a dyno of what just a full exhaust will give you and its pretty good

If I had the money I would go with a set of BBK LT's to shorty X w/modularfordpowerhouse custom grind cams done by the man himself and a tune from him. However I do not possess the money.....yet.

cams are the number 1 in the power depatment, followed by lt's for a single mod power producer

Gears don't produce more rwhp, but it will get it to the ground with more "mechanical advantage" making you feel like the did add hp ... at the cost of higher rev's and some reduced gas mileage.

thanks for all the replies, excuse my ignorance, but what is a mid pipe, is that an x pipe? right now i have a mac catback, will a mid pipe(x pipe) help w/power increase, it seems like a bolt in. what x pipe would be comparable to the mac exhaust? i imagine a sound change would occur too...

Here's a good one, I've got the Magnaflow catback and I like the way it sounds. I want to keep it sounding that way. Can I change my factory H Pipe and put headers on to gain power without gaining all the noise that comes with those headers? Plus I need to stay catted..live in NJ and you know why.

i thought those LED washer nozzles make the most power... more specifically the gold ones

I would agree with heads/cams undoubtedly

well, you have resonating mufflers with magnapacks, if you goto long tube headers, a catted midpipe and some quiet mufflers you shouldnt be much louder than magnapacks on the stock exhaust.

If you really want to do a turbo, check out www.turbomustangs.com for all the info you'll need to make an informed decision. This is one of the few websites (and forums) that has NO bias based on sponsorship money.

Don't think for a second you can actually do one right for 3 grand (or less) on a 4.6 though.
