Best size tire on 17x8 rims? 255 or 275?

I am getting ready to buy some new tires for my 01 Cobra. On the Front I wanted to keep the 245x45x17 8 inch rim.

For the rears I want 45's but can't decide between 255's or 275's with a 8inch rim. Is there problems with the 275's fitting on a 8inch rim?

I like the 255's and most tire manufacturers state thats as large as you should go with an 8" rim. There are plenty of people on here with 275's though that love them.

I agree,

although people on here have larger tires, it is dangerous. Remember just because it is a bad idea doesn't mean people with Mustang still don't do them. Besides a 275 on an 8" rim is not only dangerous, but you lose tractions because tire doesn't sit right on the ground. Also 275 on 8" rims don't look as big as they would on 9" rims, meaning the "fat" tire look is effected by the rim itself.

In most cases, I would agree with you. With nitto's and other dr's though, I have not heard of anyone having any problems running 275's on a 8" rim. Nitto's typically run a bit narrower than other manufacturers. They are definatley wider and have a larger footprint than 245's though.

245/45/17 in front and 255 or 275/45/17 at the back means that you ll have tire with different heigh front and back and this is no good.

Im glad someone started this thread. It is tire time for me 19,000 miles is a worlds record for me. Not 18 anymore!

I was all set on getting the Nitto 555 Extreme Perf. 255/40/ZR17's all the way around, then I read on here that its okay to put a 275 on the back.

I have the 17 X 8" bullitts. What do y'all think??? 275 sounds awful good.

Also, should i go with the 45's or 40's sidewall height???

245/45/17s have the same sidewall height as 275/45/17s

245 and 275 are the width

45 is the sidewall height

the sidewall height is a percentage of the width. just because they are both 45 they are NOT the same. to figure it out do this...
For the 245/45/17 sidewall height...
Overall Width: 245 [mm] / 25.4 [mm per inch] = 9.65 inches wide
Sidewall Height: 9.65 x 45% = 4.3425" high

for the 275/45/17 sidewall height...
Overall Width: 275 [mm] / 25.4 [mm per inch] = 10.83 inches wide
Sidewall Height: 10.83" x 45% = 4.8735" high

so the 275 tire is half an inch higher than the 245

Also tire sizes vary by manufacturer. Not all 245/45 or 255/45 etc etc are the exact same height and width. You can go to tirerack.com and look at a specific tire and it will give you height and rim reccomendations for a particular tire.

Here are some specs for the yokohamas I own

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Yokohama&model=AVS+ES100 I am running 255/40/17's on the wifes 2000 gt and have had good luck with them. I have been through several radar speed displays at construction sites and the speedometer reads dead on.

The 255/40/17 yokohama has a diameter of 25.1 inches
The 245/45/17 goodyears has a diameter of 25.7 inches

Also having a different height tire front and back will not hurt you any. Many production sports cars now come this way many even with different size wheels. The only problem it would have is on rotation but if you are going to have wider tires on the rear you can not rotate anyway.

The nitto 555r's in the 275 width fit my 17x8" rim's just fine. I get a tad bit of sidewall buldge, but I personally think it looks better. Here are a few
pics of them. They look much wider in person. The camera along with the angle the tires are resting on skewed the picture a tad.

245/45/17 have the same heigh as a 275/40/17, but you ll have to forget about rotation. I m going with 255/45/17 at each corner. i ll get 1/4 inch more in heigh to fill the gap between the tire and fender a lill more and reduce the rpm a lill bit at 70mph
