I have a stuck open relay on my black magic fan I just bought. Instead of returning it I was thinking of simply trying to replace the relay. Has anyone taken there control unit apart? Is there a standard replaceable relay inside?

thanks for the help.

I've never had mine apart, but you could hook it up to the other connection (or your current one since it's stuck) and put on an external adjustable relay. I've considered that also because the Black Magic relay isn't the most accurate. I find myself pretty often having to run out and turn the dial to get the fan to kick on or back to get it to shut off. You could also just buy a thermostatic switch from Moroso that just screws into the intake and use that to control the fan. It comes on at 160 and off at 140. That's what I'm currently using to control my elec. water pump. It would be nice if it was adjustable though.

Well I took mine apart last night, and it does take a standard relay, however its soldered on. Since I can't be sure the relay is my problem (it could be a faulty t-stat), i'm going to simply exchange it for a new unit.

thanks for the help. and I have been reading that the relay/t-stat for the black magic fan isn't the greatest, so I may decide to upgrade to the dcccontrol i've heard so much about.

I would suggest returning it - many manufacturers void the warranty if you open stuff up and mess around with it. It's simply too hard for them to determine if something went wrong before the unit was opened up, or BECAUSE the unit was opened up.

Don't know but mine just quit the other day. Not even a year old and the car was parked untill yesterday from last Nov. I will be calling them soon. :bs:

I called and they sent a new relay and thermostat. I haven't put it in yet but they seemed nice about it. I will try to get back when I install it. If anybody is interested in what they sent let me know and I will post or send a pic of the replacement piece.
