I received all the parts Last week and had some time to get started on the install and thought I would give a report for those thinking about this upgrade. Keep in mind that my car is a 1966 with manual steering and while I have a T-56 manual I am running a Hyd. clutch. While my busy schedule has kept me from completing the job not to mention a broken hand, I would say if you have all the needed hand tools this is a fairly easy weekend project. I started off by jacking the drivers side up and removing the tire to gain access to the Pittman arm nut and tie rod along with the 3 mounting bolts for the stock box. Once I removed the bolts I found out real quick that my long tube headers were going to be an issue. I was hoping to leave them bolted up because of the complete headache the header bolts were to install but there was no way. I never removed them from the car I just unbolted it and that allowed them to move around to drop the old box. I then removed the dash to be able to see the steering wheels wiring harness...Then onto the hanger bolts to allow the whole column to be removed. And this is where I ran into a suprise...The steering shaft and box are one piece..I tugged and pulled and hurt my hand even more and then called Borgeson to be told ,oh no its one piece. So if you have stock exhaust and the time to remove it as one unit Borgeson will pay you for your stock box. I on the other hand didnt have the time or patience and used a body saw to cut the shaft off right at the box. With the header loose there was still no way to bring the new box in from the bottom so I removed the drivers side valve cover and it slid in from the top just fine. everthing bolted up just fine and with the rag joint there is some adjustability if your headers are too close to the pittman arm nut as mine was intially (see pic). The pump is going to be from an older LTD and was bought from auto zone for under $50.00 new so your application may be different but the kit comes with the hoses you will need. More to come......

If this box performs, it will be a major step for early Mustangs. Thanks for taking the time to document your experience.

My car went to the paint shop right after I got my borgeson box, but I can't wait to find out how it drives once I get the car back.

I was hoping to finish up the install last night but the Hose fittings from Borgeson were not correct. I will see if they are available locally and try to finish it up this weekend. As soon as its finished I will give a full report.

Update, The hoses were not the problem and I can only assume I had them backwards so my appologies to Borgeson. I have been extremely busy with work and kids so I have been stuck on finding the correct length serp. belt to complete the install. I will update this as soon as I have the time to finish it up.
The install is complete but I have to wait on the belts. The local stores belts are either too short or too long. I have 4 belts coming.

I have kinda regretted starting this thread and running into all sorts of other projects and business issues that have kept me from completing the install.
I took off Monday and have all of the under hood issues resolved and only have to remount the steering column to test it out. Another issue is the powdercoater has the Carb bonnet so I'll need it back before I can test drive it. I will get back to this project asap and let you guys know what I think, hopefully this weekend.

Not rushing you. Just selfishly bumping this back to the top so it's easier to check for updates.

I think we all completely understand when these projects get pushed back. Heck, I've had to build a deck, dig and berm an easement, knock out two walls in my house, renovate the kitchen, and paint four rooms since I last worked on my car. And, I'm STILL waiting for the chance! LOL--Oh, well, life happens.

I just appreciate you taking the time to update when you can.

Peace.

Hey there. As info, Borgeson will take the manual steering box back with the shaft cut off. I had called them to ask about that when I was installing by new box. They said to cut the shaft and leave about 4-6 inches. I sent mine back in the same box that the new one came in. I received my check in about a week or two. I think it was already spent on something else.

I'm not any closer to a road test but it bolted in nicely.

Well thats good to know. Other than the Carb hat still being away at the powdercoaters and a strange starting issue I am done with the install. I still have my Mom here after her surgery so time is limited but I hope to finish it up this weekend.

How stock is your mustangs steering (tie-rods, column, etc)? I came across Mustang Monthly's build with the same setup (How To Install Integral Power Steering Gear- Mustang Monthly) and in their write up he mentioned that this will not require major modifications. My question is, have you had to alter/modify any part of the steering "so far" to allow this box to be installed? Thanks!

The cars front end parts are all period correct. The steering column tube has to be shortened to allow room for the rag joint. They sell a replacement steering shaft which does allow use of your original steering wheel. I need to read the article I suppose but my install is complete so I don't know what the point would be.

yeah, I'm curious to see how well it works too. I have one out in the garage for my 69 Cougar, I still need to get the rag joint from Borgeson and I haven't decided what PS pump I'm gonna run either, hopefully I'll be able to make the stock pump work right with a pulley swap...Anyway, I'm really curious to see if it was worth the money or not

I am very interested in this part myself! I do not want to bother with one of the leaky stock systems, and rack/pinion is not going to happen. I don't know what kit to order from Borgeson though, they only list ones for 65-66 and 68-70 - what about a late-year 67? I have emailed several of their addresses but keep getting failed return notices.

1967 coupe with a 351W and hooker long-tube headers, but after removal of the hood and master cylinder (will be out for disc brakes) it looks like the stock box would easily lift out of the top without removing valve cover or header.

I have looked at a couple of magazine guides to installing this, but they completely gloss over the one part I cannot picture! My late-year 1967 Mustang has a stock rag joint, no tilt - the steering column is not one piece with the box like the magazines have said and others have written. How much easier is this install with a rag joint present? Am I going to have to cut something still?
