My brake booster is making a Whooshing noise when I depress the brakes. I figure its on its way out. My question is what brake booster should I buy? My car is a 86 Mustang. I want something slimmer if at all possible. The valve covers are close to the brake booster as it is. (351w in my car)
Any suggestions?

The 96-98 Mustang V8 cars used a hydraulically boosted power brake that used pressure from the power steering pump to provide power assist to the brake booster.

You can find these on eBay almost any time. It looks like the prices will range from $75-$150.

See http://home.comcast.net/~mjbobbitt/mustang/page1.html for the best and cheapest brake upgrades and 5 lug swaps. The site doesn't sell anything but some fittings, but the tech notes are great. It tells you what junkyard or remanufactured parts to use to upgrade your brakes. It has almost everything you could want to know about Mustang brakes on it.

J, what am I looking at here?

How would this modify onto the 86? I too have the 86 and was heading for a swap to the SN95 Booster and the infamous massaging of the strut tower or the other option of reeming the the firewall bolt holes for swap fitment.

Does this year models unit have a smaller engine bay footprint? If so, I'd like to take advantage of this swap, but would need info on how to plumb/intergate it into the 86 setup. Is that a proprtioning valve hanging at the bottom?

You need a working power steering pump and some hoses which are probably specific to a 96-98 V8 Mustang. The proportioning valve hanging off the bottom probably isn't a good match for a Fox body Mustang because of the difference in vehicle weight and balance.

Check out the Google link, there was a lot of other information including some guys that wanted to do the same thing you are thinking of.

Just remember a hydroboost is a big pile of worthless junk without the hoses, which if you have to buy cost more than the hydroboost itself.
A lesson i learned the hard way.
The 96-98 hydroboost also takes up less room than the 99-04.

Mating either one up to a fox will probably take at least one custom hose. Which mpeans you have to take an original hose, cut it and have a machine shop fasten a flexible hose in the middle so you can route it where you want.

Furthermore, without the correct brake setup the hydroboost may be a mismatch for the system.

Hydratech makes hydroboost hose kits for the fox bodies. I bought their entire hydroboost kit. Not a cheap route, but it's probably the most fool-proof way to equip a fox with a hydroboost system.
