4k hole-shot on 275/40/17 BFG DRs after a nice burnout and the rear grenaded. I haven't pulled it apart yet, but it appears to be a snapped axle. It's only got about 15 runs down the strip and I'm not even in the 13s yet . . .??

That's why the rear end is a crapshoot. It can last all season on slicks launching off the rev limiter or break on DRs like you did. Just rebuild it stronger and it won't happen again. (at least less likely to happen again)

Are the mustang 8.8's the same width as the explorer 8.8's? Cause the explorers come with 31 spline shafts, and I don't see any reason why you couldn't use the explorer carrier also. (someone correct me if I'm wrong) I have a 01 explorer 8.8 rear in my 2001 wrangler with a detroit and 35x12.50 Super Swampers, its strong!

I'm going to have to take the carrier out to get the rest of the snapped axle out as it's jammed in there. While I'm at it, I'll upgrade the components. A few questions:

1. If I pull the carrier, note the orientation of the caps, etc. do I have to have the gears re-aligned after the carrier is re-installed? This would assume I just upgraded to hardened 28 spline shafts.
2. If I upgrade the carrier and axles to 31 spline and swap the ring gear to the new carrier, do I have to have the gears re-aligned?

ok, this scares me... i don't wanna break my rear end since my parents dont like me going to the track (havent taken the stang yet)

its an auto, stock except for exhaust... odds are this wont break axles right?

I don't know how you could break your rear in a basically stock auto. The tranny will only shift so hard at factory spec.

Maybe if you do a neutral drop from redline, but that is crazy/unnecessary anyway.

yes , the Explorer diff. will fit, it is an 8.8 rearend. I have one in my car. You will need 31 spline axles. I chose Strang when I did mine, but Moser is good too. I bought what could be shipped the fastest and the cheapest. If you do not change the gear ratio, you should be able to use the same shims. Make sure you keep the right and left caps and shims in the same order they come out. Get a manual that details the installation of gears so you will not be going in blind if you are not familiar with gear and diff. replacement. When you get new axles, make sure they come with abs ring installed or you will need to get yours pressed off and installed on the new ones. :D
