Building a motor based on '85 lower end. Will E7's and a TFS1 work with 1.72's??

Friend of mine is having serious issues with the motor in his '88. It leaks, ticks, knocks and burns oil.....so we decided to just replace it with what we have lying around.

We have an '85GT project that has stalled but have the engine out of it. It has 55,000 miles and no problems other than being an E5 block.

We are just slapping this together with what we have laying around.

E5 lower end
New oil pump, pan, water pump
new timing chain
Deleted smog equipment and A/C
U/D pullies and electric fan
E7 heads w/ 3angle valve job and light port work. TFS valve springs
TFS Stage 1 cam
Edelbrock EFI manifold
24# injectors
MAF conversion
Headers w/ off-road pipe and flows.

This will all be in front of a built AOD with converter and cooler. Rest of car is modded and it's fast but the motor needs to be freshened up. It's the last part to really be touched.

My question is do you think i would be able to run 1.72 rr's with this combo? The E5 pistons are cut for valve reliefs but unsure if they will work with the TFS cam, E7's and roller rockers. I may stick with the stock RR's for now but later on down the road we want to put rr's on it. It's just than now is the time to clay the piston but we don't have the rr's.

Also any HP estimates??

that 85 short block should be no different that the 87-93 blocks. I'm building a 97 explorer engine right now with gt40p heads, and asked a similar question, if I could run 1.72 rr's with a tfs stage one cam, and was told it would be cutting it close, and that I should clay it. 1.6s may be a better bet for you. I would venture a guess that you may be ok, but just clay it b4 assembly

Mike,

good thing I came across this....when do you need the block. The 93 is in the way but you can move it yourself if you want to get it during the week.

Well I have about the same buildup as you have going on, My block is the original 85 block. Also I have E7TE heads that have had a valve job and been ported, but the thing is that I have aftermarket 1.6 rr, so I have no clue about the 1.7's. I have a cutom cam in it, but I dont remember the excat specs off the top of my head, ill have to look for the paperwork, but it is over .500 lift.

Got it running last night. Man does it sound mean. It was raining so couldn't take it for a spin but just moving it around the driveway you could tell it had tons more power than the tired old 302 it replace.
