Bypassing heater core for good

My heater core is leaking and I want to just take it out completely but I don't plan on pulling the dash right now.. I plan on caping off the bypass port on the water pump and pluging the intake.. Has anyone done this to there car yet??? Where could I find the correct plug for the intake? Is it 1/2 pipe thread?? Plus it will look better with those two metal tubes gone that run from intake to heater core..

I did it to my car when deleted my AC and Heat. I bought an aeroquip 1/2 in. NPT male to 3/8 in. NPT female fitting from summit (part # AER-FCM2139). I used this fitting so I could still screw in the ECT sensor which use to go into the heater core pipe.

Keep in mind you lose your defroster when you delete it completely. No problem for a drag car. Could be a problem in the cooler spring/fall evenings or if you're a road racer.

Yea I did take that into consideration.. I'll still have the rear defroster which helps alot.. The car is mostly summer car as it is, until it becomes strickly drag.. What did you use to plug off the water pump with?? I have a 3/8's npt plug but I'm not sure if its the correct size

I went to autozone and bought a rubber cap, used that with a hose clamp to plug off the water pump. It could be cleaner looking but its worked for over a year now so no complaints.

I was kinda thinking about going that route but i wasn't sure if a cap just being held with the clamp would hold up to the pressure of the coolant.. Maybe I'll try it though specially if you didn't have any problems, maybe i won't have any either.. thanks man

The easy way is to just pull the hoses off of the heater core and use a small length of pipe to bypass the heater core. It does not look as nice, and it won't save any weight, but it will fix your problem.

Also, if you ever decide to fix the heater core, all of the hoses will still be in place.
