Cable Clutch Kits for T-5: Mustang Steve, Ron Morris, or Modern Driveline?

I’m running the Mustang Steve set-up because it also addressed my desire to upgrade to power brakes at the time. IMO, Steve’s set-up is a better choice than the Modern Drive Line set-up and both Steve’s and MDL are a better choice then the Ron Morris Performance cable conversion. However Ron’s cross member is the absolute BEST out there!

With Steve’s set-up, you can upgrade to the extra heavy duty 5.0 cable where as you cannot do this with the MDL unit. MDL also uses a very long cable which can be prone to flex and is only available through them (Not to mention the cable/pedal geometry) Ron’s cable system is designed to push the housing over the cable which means you can’t clamp the housing to anything to keep it out of the way of headers and such.

Speaking of headers, Ford Powertrain Aplications (www.fordpowertrain.com) recently used my FB to mock up a new line of long tube headers they will be introducing next month that are specifically designed to work with cable clutches.

Here’s a link to a shot of my Mustang Steve Set-up Right now I’m running Tri-Y’s and have clutch cable held away form the collector tubes using a padded clip and a pan bolt. NEW FPA jeaders will be installed sometime next month

You think you could post me some pictures if you have any or describe the process. What kind of parts did you use?

Thanks,

Mike

I just noticed you had a 1968 if I were ou I would just get the mustang steve setup. His products are great. I have a 1969 and he doesn't build a kit for that. Modern Driveline has one but it only works with certain headers and rather than spend $500 on headers I am going to build my own kit for $50. There is a lot of math, trial and error that goes into this and if it can be avoided I would avoid it.

I have actually decided to go with the Mustang Steve setup now. I was on the fence but after reading all the responses in favor of MS I figure I will go with his. Know I have to figure out whether I should buy his complete package or send him mine. I do have a flux core welder so I was thinking of just doing it myself. I figure I will do whatever takes the least amount of time.

this is what i did make. i got some cold roll steel (1/8" i think) and i cut three shapes out. i then butt welded them together, then stuck it on top of the clutch pedal. i'll see if i can dig up the CAD drawings i made.

here is a very quick 3-D model i made just to give you an idea. these are not the right dimensions, just some i made up.

hope this helps. i'll try to find the correct dimensions when i get home from work.

Alright, so I just received the MustangSteve setup last night. Does anyone have some close up shots of the area that the cable comes through the firewall? Any advice from you veterans on the installation of this kit?

Thanks

I have the Modern Driveline clutch cable and think its a nice piece and it works great. Its been on the car for about 2 years and 6k miles. I can't comment on the others.

Wow, signed on for the first time in a long time and saw that there was a post. Anyway, keep in mind a long time ago, I did have to massage the cowl a bit to fit the MS setup. It was really tight. I realized how much I hate working under the dash of a 40 year car at that point.

Maybe someone can help me the following issue. I have tri y headers on my car with the MS clutch setup and I cannot figure out anyway to keep the stock 5.0 clutch cable from resting on the headers an melting through rendering the cable worthless. Any suggestions?
