I am leaving Arkansas for the navy this month, and will be in California for my AIT school for about 6 months. My insureance guy says i will have to re-insure my car out there (which will be more expensive, and its bad enough already for an 18 year old with a cobra). I was wondering if I would have to pass inspections for for emissions and smog (and have to change to a catted h pipe). I have been told by some people that i will be fine since im only gonna be there for a few months, and since its for the military. Anyone know what i will have to do?

first off, ive never heard about you having to switch plans especially for a 6 month trip. second, as long as you have out of state plates they can't touch ya.

if you are gonna be here for a short time then no you dont have to mess with emissions. i believe that you also do not have to be reinsured. if for some reason you do need to have emissions done you have to use the STOCK H pipe.

Emission tests here in Cali. are tied to DMV registration of the vehicle. You have to pass in order to get your car registered. If your registration on your vehicle expires and you register in Cali, then you will have to get smogged to get your Cali tags. Supposedly if your in Cali. for more than a month, the cops can make you register. So, don't get a ticket or get pulled over during your visit and they will probably not notice how long you've been here.

If the agent told you you have to switch plans for california there must be a reason. Full benefits, coverage, costs, etc. If you can afford it for the 6 months go for it. If you can't it's no big deal just expect something Might go wrong with coverage if you're still on the old coverage from Arkansas. As for registration at the california dmv you'll have smog your car. If this is too much hassle for you i'd leave the plan alone and don't register the vehicle. Just be careful.

nonono u guys have it all wrong. My neighbor up the street drives to navada everytime he has to re-register his car, so he keeps navada plates. He's never had a problem with the law, or the cali DMV. As long as u are registered in another state your fine, but if u expire while here, drive to navada to re-register. It costs only like 10 bucks to register there, and there isn't many emission laws i think.

You should be fine since you are in the military. My father was in the military and had Florida plates for years before switching to CA plates, so registration was not an issue. Plus, if you can prove residence in another state, you can register there. A friend of mine has Nevada plates and laws like the tint and smog did not apply.

ya you need to either own land or own a business in nevada to register there. a friend of mine decided he is gonna buy a Skyline GT-R, so he is "incorporating" a business in florida and having the car listed as a "company vehicle".

You don't have to register in California even if you were stationed here for 3 years. Military members are not required to register their vehicle in California. Even if a cop questions your out of state plates , once he sees thos DOD stickers on your window he can't do *****. Its actually a federal law.
