Cam Indexing...

My girlfriends father is going to be doing a H/C/I combo on his 1979 Vette (yes I know CHEVY) and how necissary is it to index the cam? He is going to get the H/C/I Power Pack from Jegs. I am just curious if cam indexing is truely needed... Thanks....

Wow, aren't you full of helpful advice? The door is that way, too...

What does the cam card call for? I installed my TFS1 cam straight-up, but that probably doesn't help much. I'd really just go based on what the cam manufacturer says.

I do not have the combo as of yet, but I'll check it out when he recieves it. I pretty much figured that would be the case as far as installing it straight up. I know some cams have three lashes in them for different degrees of timing. Thanks... Joey

No prob man. Just wait for the cam to arrive, or check the manufacturer's website and see if you can find specs on that particular cam. That way, you can possibly order a timing set in advance, if Chevys work the same way as ours. I know on Fords you can get a timing set that has different keyways cut into the timing chain sprockets that give you the option of like 4° retarded, straight-up, or advanced. Not too sure on Chevy engines, since I've really never played around too much with them.

I haven't really messed with a Chevy either, but I'm going to do the work for hm, he is just going to buy the stuff he needs. Kinda a nice trade off if you will....

I would definitely do it myself. Tolerances can stack nicely or all to one side...............

If you want the cam to perform in like advertised you need to check the cam card and index it to the specs on the card. Its easiest to do this with the heads off.
