Cams

Hey guys I am thinking of putting in a new set of cams in my 2001 Mustang GT. My plans for the car are a catted H pipe with a Flowmaster cat back, probably some sort of cold air intake, plemum, and maybe a new throttle body and MAF. And of course a new programer.

So my question is this, what kind of cams should I go with? I drive the car every day so I don't want anything to wild. And what should I do with the intake? I know that a cone filter and a pipe don't do much, but what about the plemum, throttle body, and MAF? Should I do all of those?

VT Stage 1 or 2 have gotten great reviews from owners.. same with Comp Cams.. it all depends on how much performance you want. Definately would want to think about a tune with that.

If you do the plenum/tb, it seems Accufab has also been popular in the mustang community, and has been shown in several magazines to gain the most in nearly every one I've read.

You're not going to see a huge gain from a CAI kit, but FIPK seems to give some decent power gains, although minimal.

MAF wise, I'd leave it alone, unless you plan on doing some bigger mods down the road, but it's your choice.

I am personally a VT Engines man. I have VT stage 2's and they are awesome. They do stall sometimes but that is more the tune and a problem I have with O2 sensors not the cam. They create great power and have a nice lope to them. You do need steep gears like 3.73's or better yet 4.10's. You also need better valve springs like comp cams valve springs. Intakes I have no idea.

either VT cams or Comp Cams. if you go w/ a stage II cam or more aggressive, you're going to need new valve springs as well. If you do stage I cams, the stock valve springs will be fine. you're definetly going to need to have your car dyno tuned after the cams are installed. If you have an auto car, you're going to need a higher stall converter and gears to benefit from the cams.

How much more power can you make w/ the VT stage 1 cams, and how much w/ the VT stage 2 cams in a 4.6 w/ PI heads/cam? I always see postings about the cams getting great reviews, but never seen anyone post any numbers... so assuming you're getting a good tune w/ the cams, how much more power? (and does economy suffer much if any?)

i believe theyre both pretty much the same in the ballpark of 30rwhp N/A(depending on your setup). if your car has forced induction, the stage 2 will produce more hp

if u going to get cams as well as a new mid pipe and catback, u might want to look into headers as this would be the weakest link in your chain

I'd take it to the dyno just to check the a/f ratio and keep everything in line, so it doesnt crap out on you later down the road.

Like nighthawk said, i'd get headers also if you're going to go with a midpipe and catback. Some Longtubes, if ur not in an emissions testing state.
