Can I adjust the clutch here: *pic*

My clutch pedal engages at the top which I've gotten used to but now I'm having some potential problems:

1. I cannot burn rubber unless I'm turning or at a slight roll.....if I dump the clutch I just start very slow.
2. Sometimes it is hard to pull the car into reverse. It just stops so I have to keep going into different gears and pulling slowly down into reverse.

The car shifts great. I tested the clutch by shifting into 4th at around 20 mph....there was no slipping. It grabbed and pulled. I'm wondering if the pedal is too high and isn't fully engaging/disengaging (I'm guessing here...can you tell:) ). I've tried to adjust at the FWA but am getting no difference. So I've traced the clutch cable to this point. Can I adjust it here (sorry about the white space. I'm still trying to figure out how to make the pics smaller):

Also, can someone please explain the route of the clutch cable? From pedal to where ever. Thanks.

No you can not adjust at that point. The only adjustment is at the clutch pedal, by pulling up on the pedal. You should hear a click and if not your cable is done for. I made small shim and i put it between the firewall and the clutch under the hood. I believed it helped a little.

The cable is relatively new. I bought the car in Feb. and the cable had recently been replaced. I'll check for the click when I can get to the car in a couple of hours. Do you have any pics of this shim?

no i don't sorry. If you say the cable is new you shold be able to pull up on the pedal ad it should click and then push it back down, do it a couple of times and see, the shim was about 2 in wide and 2.5 to 3 in tall and cut out a small u shaped cut so it can slide over the cable. I stuc it betwwen the "stopper" on the clutch cable and the firewall. Its kindof ghetto but it was all i knew how to do.

Adjustable cable set-up

Ever thought about buying a firewall adjuster kit?

I bought mine from www.steeda.com You can buy the whole kit: p/n 555-7040 83-95 adjustable cable, double hook quadrant and firewall adjuster $99.95. It is recomended to buy an adjustable cable set-up if you are running a performance clutch.

Yeah, I have it but when I adjust the FWA nothing happens. I'm wondering if it was installed wrong.

You need to losen the cable and start your adjustments all over. By looking at the pic your cable is adjusted as far as it will go. Read through your adjustment instructions again and start over.

I had to start over on mine a 2nd time before I got it where I wanted it. I have the steeda cable/fwa/quick release quadrant kit.

push your clutch down and slip you foot off the peddal and let it spring up on it's own. It will come up with a good bit of force and adjust something....I read on here that someone did that and I tried it and it worked. It gave me a little play at the top of the peddal and engaged about 1/4 way off the floor....feels awsome now.

Here's an article by Jeremy Thompson that should help you out. He used to have pics of cable routing and what not, but I'm not sure if they're still there (his site is under construction).

Good luck.

I bought this car with the adjustments the way it is. It does look like I'm going to have to do something over but I don't have the instructions to get it done. I do know I have the Steeda FWA but I don't remember the details on the type of clutch cable.

Thanks for the link HISSIN, it will give me something to go by. This Saturday is work on the car day. Things to get accomplished:
1. Install my 3G alt.
2. Install my OP and WT gauges.
3. Fix my clutch cable/FWA issue.

Do we know where the point of engagement is? It sounds like it's real high up (you dont have to depress the pedal very far to change gears).........??

I didnt read much of this before (I just wanted to get the article posted in case it helped). That looks like an adjustable cable. If it is: I'd run the FWA fairly close to the firewall (but a few turns out) and then make the adjustment at the cable.

This will allow you to use the FWA to fine tune it (leaving room to take up slack as necessary).

Good luck.

Yes it is extremely high. I can change gears by barely pressing the pedal down....it kinda make for some quick shifts if done correctly. I think I have the FWA as far from the firewall as it will go....I'll pull it in tomorrow and do like you say. What do you mean about the make the adjustment at the cable? Are you talking about doing something with the part (what is this called) in the picture above?

You need to get the point of engagement down (so you have to push the pedal further to change gears). This means turning the FWA CW (tighten it). It's counterintuitive to tighten the FWA to loosen the cable, but it's because the FWA is acting as an adjustable spacer.

Under the car at the clutch fork, does your cable have a nut on the back side of the fork? If so, you can turn that nut to adjust the cable.

Good luck.

Ok. I think that is what I took a picture of in the the first post in this thread. It does have a nut on the back side. Thanks.

Sounds right. The FWA is really redundant in your case, but I guess it's nice for fine tuning the adjustment.

You should be able to get it all dialed in with both adjustment means available. (oh, to slacken the cable at the clutch fork, you would loosen the nut - that one's intuitive). Make sure there's a lock nut on the threaded rod or your adjustment can wander. Most adjustable cables come with a nut - a trip to the hardware store can get ya a new one.

Good luck.

on my cable- which is identical to that- the clutch releases at the right spot when the nut on the end of the cable is backed out further- you have it tightened all the way, which i did at first also, and it release really high- so i turned the nut tthe other way now it works how it did before i replacaed the stock cable, and i did it without a fwa

Update. Finally a month and a half later, I got under the car and adjusted the nut back. Unfortunately I went too far back and the clutch now releases on the very bottom. Tomorrow I'll get under and make a few smaller adjustments and I'll be good. Thanks for the help guys.
