Casting Number Questions

I have a 69 Mach1 with what is supposed to be the original 351W. I have a book that decodes the casting numbers but I am having a bit of trouble with something. The engine number is C90E-6015 and the intake and exhaust manifolds also all start with C90E. My handy decoder books suggests that the 'E' on the end of these numbers specifies that this engine is for a Fairlane. Does this mean that the engine actually came from a Fairlane? or was it just originally designed for a Fairlane? The engine tag matches the build sheet but of course that tag can be bolted to a lawnmower engine; so how do I know if this is really the original engine? I apologize in advance if this has been answered before or is a really stupid question in general.

I think the E in that location means that it was the Engine Engineering group that released the part drawing.

Someone chime in if Im wrong on that.

Ford really didn't go to those lengths. There are many stories from workers who pirated stuff from parts bins on all the assembly lines.

For the most part, 351w engines sat by the hundreds on pallets and were taken as needed, regardless of chassis. Sounds like you have the correct engine.

The numbers are correct. C9=1969. O means the part was originally designed for a mid size Ford, in this case the Fairlane, but not necessarily installed in a Fairlane, could have been used in any number of other Fords or Mercury cars and or trucks. The E stands for Engineering group. If it was a part number then there would be a Z in that position.

what d.hearne said. there is a difference between casting numbers and part numbers. casting numbers will almost always the "e" connotation, if it was a part number then the "e" would denote a fairlane part, a mustang part part would use a "z" and an "f" would designate a service replacement part i beleive. could be wrong on the "f" though, but i have seen a lot SR parts with the f designation
