Cat Converter question

Alright youz guyz, I have a few questions. I have a 94 GT with a o/r h-pipe. I bought the car when I lived in Nebraska, where there was no emissions testing, but now I live in Illinois and they do emissions testing around here . Do you guyz think I should buy a complete h-pipe with high flow cats or just buy high flow cats and have a muffler shop put them on?

Second question, do the high flow cats have the air tube connection? Appartently my air tube was cut and now has a rubber hose that connects it to the o/r pipe.

Third question, I'm used to the exhaust note of the o/r pipe, what kind of a difference will high flow cats bring, sound wise?

Fourth question, What kind of cats should I buy?

Buy a compete H-pipe, and take it off after the inspection. Repeat this each year. That way, you can keep the extra power and sound of your off-road pipe.

DON'T go with the cheap Catco H-pipe, mine was HORRIBLE to install...a BBK would do you fine.

Yes, the same way that your off-road pipe has it. You'll need to fab something.

What I did, was cut the pipe close to the smog pump. I then lined up the cut off part of pipe to the pipe on the cats and used muffler tape to hold them together. I then ran a rubber heater hose to connect the pipe again where I had cut it.

You DO NOT want to use a rubber hose close to the cats. It will burn.

It will be much quieter. I hate it. My exahust booms with my BBK off road pipe, but is fairly quiet with the Catco pipe. It's also noticeably slower.

Fourth question, What kind of cats should I buy?

Being that my BBK off-road H-pipe installs easily and fits well, I couldn't advise you not to buy their catted H-pipe as it should be the same thing, with cats.

Thanks for responding, but I don't know about swapping h-pipes just for inspection. I plan on leaving it on once it's on. If I spend $400 dollars it's staying on man.

Why not just find a stocker to swap in and out like stated above? If you're only doing it once or twice a year, it's worth the half hour it takes to do it. I'd get rid of mine for $20, and it hasn't been on the car since I bought it in 2000 with 55K. I'm sure you can find someone around your area that would sell you their stock pipe or even give it to you.

well guys if I had a place lift or even a place to change out the h-pipe twice a year it wouldn't be a problem, but since I don't it would be a pain in the a**. Thanks for the advice anyway guys

I got my brand new x-pipe with cats off ebay sent to my door for under $300. Don't need to spend $400 or more. UPR products x-pipe is another for around $300. BBK and others are way too expensive IMO. I had no problems installing mine other than having to cut the stock smog pipe and using a hose to connect it to the x-pipe.

I have a bassani X /cats right now, it is noticably quieter, however I didnt notice any difference in power. I have a borla cat back and my car is by no means quiet; And I still get tons of compliments on the way it sounds.

I have actually heard that with or without cats, the power difference is really not too noticable. It's more of a psychological thing, while it may be somewhat louder, it isn't necassaraly more powerful.

On the sound side an h-pipe will give you that classic v-8 rumble, where as an x-pipe will be more of an "exotic, raspy" sound.

That sounds like its close to me were you live...I think there may be a sim. city in the STL mo side though so I may be confusededdd'....

If your on the western side of Il. close to STL but still in Il. I would double check the smog thing. That and I think they are doing away with it statewide in Il. anyway (I think I heard it passed anyway).

I think your in an area that does not have smog tests, maybe a visual, but I am preaty sure you dont have smog there...
