Catalytic converter guts went into my catback

I posted several weeks ago about one of the cats on my MRT H-pipe going bad and was rattling terribly. The guys at MRT sent me a new cat to have welded in place since the cat was still under warranty. Before the new cat arrived, I had almost completely stopped driving the car because the rattle was so annoying.

The day the cat arrived I drove the car on a short trip to the store just to keep the battery charged up. On the way, the rattle got *really* loud, and then suddenly quiet and shortly thereafter the SES light came on. I think this is when the cat guts when down the H-pipe and into the cat back. :nonono:

I took it home and disconnected the back of the H-pipe from the catback. Sure enough there were pieces of ceramic stuff in the H-pipe and in both catback sections. I think I managed to get about half of the pieces out of the catback by kindof fishing them out with a long skinny pick-up tool I have.

There are peices still in the mufflers. :( Anyone have any good ideas about getting them out??? The catback is stock so it doesn't come apart.

Lesson learned - if the cat starts rattling get it fixed quickly before it spews. :(

Anyhow, I got the new cat welded in yesterday and the old one was empty. Not a single bit of its innards was left. At least the SES light is gone now.

Thanks in advance for any ideas. :flag:

Try firing some high pressure air up the tialpipe to see if you can blow it backwards back into the flowtubes where they would bolt to the H-pipe. A leaf blower would probably be ideal if you've got one.

That's the only idea I have been able to come up with. User the blower part of my shop vac to push the stuff back out the other end, and maybe even try to suck it out with another shop vac. I think I'll try it tomorrow - I'll let you know if it works.

Anybody else have any good ideas???

Just to close out this thread, I had no success getting the cat guts out of the catback muffler. Theres only one piece visible, and its not rattling (right now) so I guess its goign to stay there until I can buy a catback.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Can you get the section off to shake it around? One more thing you could try is blowing it out with the garden hose. The water's not going to hurt it and it might just be enough to dislodge it?

Don't cat guts normally get stuck in the grill or on the bumper??? Just kidding, I couldn't pass it up. With all the baffles inside a muffler I'm not surprised you can't blow it out. If you have a powerful shop vac, close off most of the tailpipe and somehow (tape maybe?) seal the vac hose to the other end and try to suck the crap back out the way it came in. Maybe it hasn't gotten too far into the baffles from the engine side. If you don't close off the tailpipe end, you won't get enough velocity to pull anything back through. Good luck.

Its the stock catback, so it doesn't come apart. Hadn't thought of the water trick, I may have to try that if I get desperate.

I tried that, with both the tailpipe end closed and open, no luck. Didn't budge. Thanks though!

go to a muffler shop and have the mufflers cut out and shake them until you get all the stuff out.

Probably the right way to do it - even if there's just one piece now trapped in that muffler, you'll only have to have just that one muffler cut out & then re-welded back in (after you fish out that remaining piece of catalytic converter material).

G'luck!
