This weekend I replaced my cracked lower intake with an aftermarket OEM quality one (the the aluminum reinforced crossover). I was in a bind and needed one pretty quick so I bought one of ebay. If arrived in the mail a couple days later and the intake looked really good! I was happy with it, untill I tried to install it. It comes with a couple different alt. brackets so you can chose the right one for you application, wich is nice - but the one that fits the 99-01 is hideous and twice as large as it needs to be. The bracket interferes with the PCV line where it attatches to the plenum and the front of the bracket interferes with the upper radiator house where it attatches to the t-stat housing. And if thats not enough to piss you off, once the intake is on, right before you put on the fuel rails and injectos, I decided to re-torque my plugs.... the intake NOW interferes with the spark plug wells! I cant get a spark plug socket in all the wells! I can get them in 3/8 of them, which sucks!

PLEASE be aware when you order a lower intake that the aftermarket OEM quality ones are NOT GOOD.

on a side note, when I pulled off my cracked intake I realized that the coolant leak actually wrecked part of my head. It eroded away a little bit around the coolant passage at the front port on the drivers side head (behind the t-stat). I called the dealership to see what they said and after I got the car all apart they told me to bring it in and they would take care of everything free - AFTER I was half way done and had the crappy intake already in my hands. They didnt think they could replace the head but they would have to look at it. SO for now I filled in the eroded area with JB weld, and it seemed to work pretty good. I know its sad its ghetto rigged but I was out of options and I hope to get some stage 2 heads this spring... My luck sucks

depens on what kind of aftermarket intake you used.

I have a Dorman intake on mine. I work at a dealership and laid the Dorman I have now, right next to the $400.00 one we have at the dealership. The ONLY difference in the two was that the O.E. one requires gaskets. The Dorman one has the gaskets built into the intake, both the TB, intake and water passage ones. And they are replaceable if need be. The best part, the Dorman was only $170.00 new and came with the correct alt bracket.

Basically, something as simple as an intake, don't buy E-Bay, just go to the local parts stores.

The Dorman one is available from O'Reilly's or other places that carry Dorman. In addition that they offer both the NPI and PI intake, in addition to offering a warranty on the part. (ex. won't fit right.)

ok... well it looks like I do have the dorman OE solutions intake...? What the crap is going on? Is it possible to find a smaller diameter spark plug socket? I will try and take some pictures of it tomorrow to show you what I mean.

Can you get to all your spark plugs with the dorman intake? Im just using the standard craftsman spark plug socket, and I dont think there is any possible way to put the intake on wrong...

damn this sucks

 You would be surprised how long that JB weld will hold up, as long as you cleaned the area you applied to good first, I'd be willing to be you'll never have another issue with it. I've got JB weld holding part of my transfer case together on my 89 bronco. It was supposed to be a temporary fix too, but the damn thing has held together for the past four years.

Gods blood can seal anything :Word:

well, just another reason to stay away from aftermarket parts. I preach this and preach this, ther is nothing quite like the OEM stuff. it might cost more up front but it fits wthout issues. also the guy that works for Ford WTH the $400.00 intake, all you need is the 1W7Z-AB intake (@$250.00) and some other small parts, we do the "PI" up-grades kits for @$300.00 includes intake, coolant tube & nipple, gaskets and O-rings.

Randy is right, although I mis-quoted the price as Ford has recently decided to reduce the price on the above manifolds due to increasingly competitive prices of aftermarket suppliers. so a O.E. ford manifold is barlely above the aftermarket price wise.

I have personally installed (3) of the aftermarket ones at work on Crown Vic's, ,Mustangs and Town Cars with no problems. Have also installed countless O.E. ones and have compared both the Dorman unit and the O.E. unit side by side, with no noticeable differences other than the aftermarket having the gaskets built into the manifold.

not sure what the deal is for the user that started this thread........

Silver Bullet00, dont let nobody get you down. I had to buy an aftermarket manifold, and the alt. braket made me want to throw up and the manifold makes it almost impossible to change my spark plugs too. My head has also been damaged. I bought mine off ebay, wish i hadnt. Let me know if you get anywhere with ford

Ill post my progress with ford, I am determined to get somewhere with them! As for the intake, I guess it wasnt as bad as I originally though. I was right that a standard spark plug socket will not fit the well. The intake hangs over the hole just barely. I could probably get the socket in the well but I dont want to get it stuck in there. So today when I was messing with it I got the idea to try a 5/8 deep socket instead. Holding them tip to tip they appeared to be the same size, BUT the deep socket 5/8 fit just BARELY! So that is enough to make me happy. I will have to get out the micrometer to see the width difference in the two....

thanks for the replies guys!
