I decided that I will put a standard rotation water pump on my car....

I have read that some timing covers can only be used on certain direction water pumps. Also read that on some stangs the timing chain wont need to be changed if you put either a standard or reverse rotation pump on it........so I have the 89 5.0 do I need to change the timing chain cover on mine if I put a standard rotation pump on there? (plz say no it would make my life easier )

I have a post on here before that explains it. but pretty much all i have is the crank, alt, water pump, (and i'm getn rid of smog pump) running on the belt. Now the belt makes little contact so I'm want to put a standard rotation water pump and different alternator bracket. I heard that on some stangs if you chang the type of pump you have to change the timing cover.

On ALL 5.0 L, you have to match the timing cover to the type of water pump you are using. Standard rotation is a bad term to use, because it's standard for what? On the late model 5.0L, standard rotation is actually reverse rotation (counter clockwise or stock rotation), if you are planning on removing the A/C and P/S, you have to go with a forward (clockwise) rotation water pump and matching timing cover. If you change one you have to match up the other to match otherwise your car will overheat. I was looking for part numbers, but cannot find them right now. I'll see if I can find the p/n tomorrow and post it.

never heard about that, I guess Im the one who's confused, haha.

so in answer to your question, you could go to autozone website part look-up, if you look up water pumps it will tell you if its clock-wise or c.c.w rotation. then find a sbf w/ c.w. rotation, buy it and the timming cover for it.

You do not need to change the timing cover. You can use the factory timing cover but what you need to do is use the standard rotation pump with the backing plate of a factory H.O. water pump. You also need to drill a new bolt pattern in your pulley to make it work.

I had this issue a few months ago and since I work at a parts store I did a little research and was able to mess around with a couple pumps and take pictures. If you scroll down you will see all the pics I took and the descriptions.

The easiest thing for me to do was buy the matching timing cover instead of looking for doable parts.

Here is a chart of Timing Covers for reference. The stock FI 5.0 cover is the one on the bottom right (reverse rotation, electric fuel pump). Notice the D's. If you dont have the backing plate with just holes in it for the water ports (for standard rotation WP) , you will have water leaks. (mob, Great write up on your link BTW)

I guess instead of a cw water pump, i should just put a delete pulley in there so the belt makes better contact with the pump. here are some pics of how it looks now

ok, I have never seen the tensioner down in that position before, I have read about some ppl changing and moving it around. That is not alot of contact for the WP. If the tensioner is back in the stock location (pushing down on the belt just to the right of the alternator). You can kinda see the way mine was in these photos.

I know this is a bad pic, but you can kinda see my routing.

yea I haven't seen any others like that either. Maybe I should just move my tensioner or get either an a/c or p/s delete and just keep a counter clockwise pump on there??? any ideas
