Is a "stockish" rebuild with great street performance attainable? Maybe Ford 303 cam Thumper heads, Tmoss or Edelbrock heads, and a balanced bottom end? How does something like this stack up in the $$, reliability dept., over one of the crate motors? Oh, Yah and it has to be able to pass emissions. Any imput welcome.

That being said…..you can put new rings, bearings and gaskets into your stocker for less than $250.00 (assuming you do it yourself) and have it be stone reliable. There’s really no need to balance or blueprint the bottom end afterwards either, especially if you’re running it on the street at less than 6,000rpm (which you should be).
